horizontal lines on export from FCP

Hey guys,

Simple question here, I was exporting some clips to pass on to someone else who's going to do some work with them, trying to get them to him as close to how we shot them as possible.

I exported using the Export->Quicktime Movie->Custom and chose compression: "none."

When I look at the clips I exported, they have this thin black horizontal lines in a lot of frames, that don't appear in the capture files or in FCP. Does the next person just need to remove pulldown again?

Also, if I'm just trying to get certain clips here and there of the footage just as I shot them, is there some way I can just grab them straight from the capture files instead of exporting them?

Thanks a lot!!

I should've added that we shot in 24p and I captured it in FCP with advanced pulldown removal into a 29.97 timeline..

you put it in a 29.97 time line when you removed the pulldown. You need to put in in a 23.97 time line. you are now woking with true 24 frame video. The other ting is you could use cinma tools to put the pull down back on and make it 29.97 video. I hope this helps it might not.

Passing your footage

Passing your footage

tmp309,
That was one thing what imgentertainment@mac wrote. You should either
not remove pull-down and edit on 29.97 timeline or remove it and edit on
23.98 timeline. Another thing that I was going to add here was to suggest you
to use Export->QuickTime Movie instead of QuickTime Conversion. People tend to
treat freshly captured footage as uncompressed, but that's not true. The footage
has been compressed inside of the camera even before it was put on tape in order to
fit on the format of the tape that you're working on (e.g. DV/NTSC). Having this
said, using uncompressed setting under QuickTime Conversion doesn't make whole
lot of sense. Try to select the format you're working under QuickTime Movie, which
in your case will be *DV/NTSC 23.98.* Also, make sure you click on *Self-contained
movie.* It should give you the exact same quality of video as what you had captured
unless you rendered whole lot with color correction, etc. That's a whole different
story. But it's the best possible exported footage you can get, anyway. Hope this
helps.

OK. I guess I'm in trouble here.

So now what can I do? I have my edit done in a 29.97 timeline. How can I get it to a 23.98 timeline?

Help is greatly, greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

or what can I do to save my edit without having to recapture all my footage and do the edit completely from scratch?

Should I just export using "Current Settings" (File->Export->Quicktime Movie->Current Settings)?

I copied it into a 23.98 timeline and when I exported using either "Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC" or "Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC" or even doing a custom setting and choosing "None" under "Compressor", I'm still getting the interlacing lines.

However, if I choose "Current Settings" or "DV NTSC" the lines are gone. These exports also look the closest to my captured movies. (ironically, they look less sharp than the "uncompressed" movies)

Thanks so much for your help. It's huge.

Hope it works out. Still sounds like there is something wrong. Compresstion is a tricky thing and it takes practice and time to get it right.
