in search of comic book artists

I have a script that is a sort of mad max/matrix type story. I don't think hollywood could possibly understand it without visuals. My plan is to approach a comic book artist and develop a comic book around the material, try to build some awareness that way, then go to said hollywood people with script and comic in hand. Even if the comic book doesn't take off, I'll have the visuals I need. Does anybody have any experience doing this? How do you advise I approach it?

The more well-known and talented the comic book artist, the more awareness the story will receive, so I'm aiming for working comic book artists. Are these people hard to reach? With Hollywood clamoring for every little piece of comic book property, have these people become rock stars and therefore I shouldn't even bother? Or could I feasibly go to a comic store, find something I like, find the contact information for the author, and ring him up?

I believe I'm on the right track, but if anybody has any specific experience, I'd love to hear it.

thanks,
