Pin Mic?

G,

I don't personally own a pin mic -- yet. I have seen them in action, and they sound good (not great) but the ability to hide them in plain sight makes them very attractive. But, much of what I could do with in terms of hiding with a pin mic I can do with a B6, and get what I understand to be better sound. So, like lots of others on this forum, I will probably buy one to try it out, then turn around and sell it if I don't like the sound as much as my B6.

If you're looking for a great mic to go with your G2's, then get the B6 or a COS11. A good, lower cost option is the EMW or a B3. If you're getting a G2, you will want to replace the stock mic.

Somewhere in the threads here, I did a side-by-side comparison of the B6, EMW and ME2.

Timapter,

I don't have one yet. I'm undecided about buying one. I love the B6, and would probably just buy another one of those, but many mixers say you need a variety of mics at your disposal, so I will probably end up buying one to try it, and see if I like it as much as a B6 and then go from there. I'm a bit concerned about re-wiring options with the COS11...I know I can get my B6's rewired for Lectro if and when...not so sure about COS11's. And, besides, I need to support the California economy, right? ;-) (Countryman is located in California...)

ah! you kill me when you say that stuff!!! :)

i know what you mean... im always terrified of mixing my mics! i feel i have to buy everything in twos! but ive also heard that the COS11 sounds damn amazing. let me know if you try one out or anything, id really like to know what you think..

If mixing other lavs with the B6 watch out for phasing issues. It can be corrected with a phase reversing cable or many mixers provide this feature.

Cheers

The pin mic is very cool. I have used it. It's a hot mic. It's not the best sounding lav out there, but it's something that I think everyone should have at least on of in their kit because it will get you out of jam at one point or another.

Okay Wabbit, you just settled it for me. A pin mic (thanks to Dave's suggestion) and more B6's. ;-)

wabbit/dave - thoughts on the COS11?

and a question: lets say i shoot with a pin mic and a b6, mixing them to one channel with a boom mic on the other. should I always phase invert one of the lavs?

Timapter,

I've never had to phase invert a lav...and I shoot that way all the time. I usually am running boom into one channel, and sometimes as many as 4 lavs into the other channel...never had any problems (other than the wonderful issues associated with wireless kits...and the occasional clothing rub. ;-)

phil,

even with, say 2 b6s and two emw'2? or basically a mix of lavs on the lav channel?

heres another question: do you invert the phase of the boom track then? i once had a sound mixer tell me that some stuff i recorded had an issue here and there (nothing too hectic) when the boom passed from one person to another because the boom was phasing with the lavs. ever heard of that?

thanks,
tim
