Best deal on server space

Greetings,

In anticipation of a new company name and website to be build this upcoming month, I'm in need of getting paying for a dedicated server space. It would be nice to get a streaming server option for both quicktime and/or windows media. I'm hoping to jump in at a moderate monthly rate and then upgrade when the time is right. I might also try to get my own server and run it off my highspeed for a while... but I'd rather just know what I'm getting and have it be rock steady.

I won't need tons of space, but maybe close to a TB.. and maybe that much downlown/bandwidth each month. I'm somewhat green to the whole thing so sorry if I'm lacking here. What service/website local do people recommend? What should I look out for? Can I host several URLS on one account/space? Anyone use Iweb? Or still good to do it in HTML/Dreamweaver?

I have friends paying hundreds a month, and I can't do that right now. Maybe 50-70 a month to start and then I'd go from there...

Thanks for any and all info... This will also be a site for me to post my crappy footage Looking to add to the cause.

Hi Justyn,

Is this a typo? I hope you mean GB. I do web design on the side and use virtuoso net solutions. I have been with them over a year and a half now, and love them. I have never waited longer than a few minutes for a question to be answered.

You probably won't be able to find a good host that provides a dedicated server for under $100/month. I pay $24/month for a shared server with a static address, 7GB storage, and 150GB of data transfer/month... plus some other perks. Here are some of their plans. I use the Developer plan. They have other deals for less $ as well. I have my personal website along with some of my other sites. They are all on the same server space/account. I also use the server space to transfer Final Cut OMF files and goods like that. I still have plenty of storage space and room for more data transfer. My site had over 2000 unique visits last month, so it is a pretty busy site for a personal site. My point in this is that you probably won't need a dedicated server.

I wouldn't bother trying to run a website from a server connected to high-speed. It will just be waaaaay too slow, especially with video files. Web hosts use T1 and T3 lines, which aren’t even comparable to high-speed.

With most packages, you will be able to host more than one domain. IE. you could have coolfilm.com, myweb.com, justyn.com, etc. and have them all run from your space on the server. With mine, I am allowed as many as I want.

Main points in your search should be:

1)Stay away from ones that allow porn or other adult material. Where there is smut, there is spam, child port, on and on. Just stay away, trust me.

2)Stay away from ones that allowing streaming on a server that is not a true streaming server. You will have one of the slowest sites around. I would avoid streaming unless you have a dedicated server or the money to host your video files on a seperate streaming server. Just post a simple html link to the movie file (make sure it has been compressed for web use). This is how I have my video files set up on my website.

3)Find theses documents at the website of the host in question: Terms of service, acceptable use policy, and privacy policy. Read these from top to bottom. This is where you will find the true answer to the two issues above.

I don't know much about Iweb. I have learned to hand code everything.

Hope this helps.

Awesome info. Just what I was looking for.. and keep it comin'.. thanks!

Yes this is a lot of awesome info. Everything makes complete sense. I will check out the site you recommend. That sounds like a great deal. I'm hoping to get the same kinds of hits you are getting.. and be able to expand as necessary. I really have gotten such great advice during my time here waiting with empty credit cards for the HVX.

I did also mean GB. TB would be a nice problem to have later on... I have seen quite a bit of activity here in the web-streaming angle. I actually have a State of FL live broadcast via windows media encoder. I'm hoping to get a lot more of this type of stuff.. so that in the summer I can do my own projects and that's it.

I'll let you know how my searches turn up. I really appreciate your time in helping a newbie out on the right path. Do you have a link to your website

Also.. Says for window and Linux. Is it Mac friendly? Does it make any difference anyway since it's just uploading a website and FTP files?

Thanks.. and yes I have web-site building stage-freight and still living in 1995.

The link is above in my post. All the underlined in my post are links :)

My site:

You are correct. The mac thing won't matter, just the file formats matter. HTML, PHP, MOV, AVI, JPG, GIF, and so on.

I make all of my images and video files on a mac.

P.S.

Thanks.. and yes I have web-site building stage-freight and still living in 1995.

It takes time and is not as simple as most think, so don't sweat it.

Justyn- I've done nearly a dozen startup websites for friends (and other poor people), all of which are hosted by these guys: http://powweb.com/

There are plenty of deals out there (and you have already received a lot of good advice, above). They have a 30 money back guarantee, over a gig of space and something like 300 gigs transfers for under a hundred bucks a year. Not a dedicated server but, and I'm not sure what your immediate intentions are, you may not need one for a while. They have been around for some time and have a solid customer base. Good luck!

Thanks guys. You are helping a newbie to get off on the right foot. I'm also glad I can do it all on a Mac.

I can already see that there's a lot of options and very good deals out there. I have hosted with dreamhost for a long time, but I can't stand that if I have a problem I can't call anyone.. at anytime. They don't even list a phone number.. and sometimes it takes a day or more to get an email response.. and then if it's not a simple answer.. or simple fix, I have to wait sometimes another day to get feedback.

Sometimes, I'll even take a Hindu Indian guy talking to me over not being able to chat on the phone at all. Everytime I call my credit care place and usually my phone company... I get some guy half way around the world in India. Everything is going over there... And when you put on the false Indian heavy accent.. they LOVE it and treat you better. I really did it last time as the guy was too funny.. and too weird for me not to do it.

Once again... Thanks brothers. This site has become the best source of info. I'm also hoping to get my HVX in a couple of weeks.. at most, then I'll have a ton of footage to post up. I'm doing a kungfu fight scene in April which should be some good laughs atleast..

Anymore info is greatly appreciated too. Hail online forums... What the hell did we do before we had them?

I've always used mediatemple.net

They're kinda the big dogs on the block for designers. Fantastic service and hosting.

Thanks Kai.. Love that avatar as well..

I think I'll be doing some surfing this week to get a deal. I think I'm down with something in the 30-40 dollar range.. Might mean one less night of Sushi and/or pints of Guniness but i'm willing to sacrifice.
