I'm afraid I can't help you there. I'm running FCP on a Mac. I've gone through the Apple certified training books and they teach you to edit in the timeline. As I said, I'm sure there are similar products for the PC NLEs.
I'm not sure which NLE is best for PC. Avid certainly is a big hitter in the industry, but many of the guys on the board swear by Vegas.
I would suggest you go to the Vegas forum and check there. I'm sure David Jimerson could probably turn you onto a software program for it.
Every program has a help section. These are not the greatest...but it will walk you through the program and tell what all the buttons do and how to use the program.
If you're using a particular program it would be easier for us to walk you through a simple project to get you started. Say Vegas or Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
All of the editing software programs guide you through the basics.I have yet to see one that actually takes you through timeline editing step by step. I am not referring to placing clips in the timeline and then adding music(anyone can do that). I am talking about adding the video clips, transitions, audio tracks and background music to the timeline.
I know that Borders and other book stores sell extensive guides on all the top programs like Premiere, Avid, Vegas, and Final Cut Pro. Each program is slightly different in how it handles transitions, audio etc. But once you learn one it's much easier to work with the others.
I am not talking about L cut or j cut I am talking about basic Timeline Editing
where you add the video, audio dialog , background music and transitions.
