Before the MQ posse swoops in . . .

If you have a tape that works for you -- if it doesn't stretch or flake or otherwise break down, and you've gotten clean captures with no dropouts, then there's no real reason to change. It's not like the old days where different kinds of tape made a difference because they were recording electromagnetic variations, and better sensitivity made for better acquisition. In the digital age, it's all 1s and 0s. You get them, or you don't. There's no "quality" difference in terms of image, sound, etc.. You get all the info, it's the same whatever tape you put it on and pull it from.

You don't want to use cheap tape because it can flake and cause damage to your camera, or at least make it necessary to clean more often. But you won't get better "image quality" with "better" tape any more than your Word file will be "better" saved to a Verbatim CD or an Imation CD. Bits are bits.

What he said.

And, make sure to stick with what works for you. Some tapes use dry lube, others use wet lube. Its not good for your heads to switch tapes.

isn't there a difference with dry lube and wet lube?

And for the record the panny tapes have screwed me enough times that I'll NEVER use them again.

I use sony. (even though I'm told they are wet lube and bad for my rig)

Thats a great example of different strokes for different folks. I try to avoid SONY like the plague if I can. SONY, in general (not their tapes) has screwed me quite a few times. So, I always opt for another brand if I can help it...
