The Libertine (Depp/Malkovich)

Just saw the trailer to this at the movies. I'm not sure what to make of it. I am looking forward to something great from Depp after Charlie and the Chocolate Fiasco. Malkovich just gives me the creeps, inside and out.

Something about the theater trailer was bugging me and I couldnt quite place it, til now (I think). Nothing big, but for some reason it stood out to me that most of the shots in the trailer seemed to be handheld. And to me, that was wierd for a presumably(?) big budget film of this sort. I would think the cinematography would be standard smooth and glossy. This definitely isnt.

ebert and roeper reviewed this film a while ago and gave it 2 thumbs way down... they said they absolutley hated it... at least that's what i remember i could be mistaken but i don't think i am...

Looks interesting.

Thanks for the link.

I love Malkovich.

He's one of the best character actors in the business, second only to Gary Oldman. Teddy KGB (Rounders) is one of my favorite characters of all time.

I wonder why it's listed as an '04 film though?

It's probably listed as an '04 film because they had to re-cut it numerous times to make it good.

Good actors in this movie may help it if it had such bad reviews. It's not their fault, it's the director. I noticed this was produced by the Weinstein brothers. Is this the first production they did NOT under Miramax?

I agree about the trailer leaving me ho-hum. I'm pretty sure it's because it doesn't explain the story at all, and to boot it just looks like another elizabethan period piece. Also, Depp seems to be doing the same old 'look at me I'm kinda wierd' shtick.

Looks pretentious and boring. imho.

I couldn't agree more, Alveraz. From the trailer, I have absolutely NO interest in seeing this movie. :thumbdown

They split. Ebert liked it, but I think he was rating it in his "This movie achieves what it set out to do" instead of his "This is a good movie" way. Roper said it was dismal and boring.

What can I say? Those guys entertain me. :embarasse

I saw that too... nothing against Depp, but I think that directors/ producers/ studios just hone in on that aspect of him and exploit the hell out of it time and time again.
