After working in the IT industry for more years than I'd like to admit, I'm finally getting out.

Within the next two weeks I'm ordering my DVX100B, quitting my well-paying full-time job, taking a part-time job, and focusing the rest of my time on writing, directing, and learning how to get the most out of the DVX.

I'll be starting a small business to do weddings and videos for businesses (and whatever other work I can get).

It's scary but my wife is going to continue working and she's 110% supportive of me.

So this is where you guys tell me "congrats", give me advice, and tell me that I'm crazy. :p
 
Damn it I envy you!!!!! Congrats my man! Are you in a situation where your monthly bills are low? I wish my house was paid off already so that I could do the same.
 
Gary - Congrats - you are crazy.
Seriously - the biggest piece of advice I can give you is don't think of this as "quitting a job" and getting your "freedom"
You need to approach it as having a new job.
It's easy to get lazy and feel like you've deserved some time off.
Get out there and hussle up as much business as you can.
For every 10 people you talk to, 1 might come through as a paying client.

My wife and I are starting to look for our first house - the fact that I've been self employed for the past few years isn't helping us out any. Luckily she's got a government job, so that sort of balances us out in terms of income stability.

My monthly bills are low. I have no debt whatsoever. Not even a car payment. But I also have no husband, so no second income to be that supportive framework to get by on.

Damn the luck! :)

thartley, there's many women out there that wish they could dump off their hubby and live like you! : P

I am just curious, are you doing this solo or do you have a business partner? I'll be in your position one day. I've been working since I was 15, full-time since I was 17...with 4 months off to have my now nearly 18 yr old daughter.

Damn it, I'm tired all of a sudden, when I think about it like THAT! :)

No "official" partner at the moment. My wife will be helping me out a lot and I have a friend who acts as a producer on my shorts... He's a partner in crime. But this business will just be me for a while. I'll keep everyone updated. Don't worry. :)
 
I'm in the same boat. I'm just trying to figure out how to make the transition. I am spending all my free time learning how to use the camera, writing and preparing to shoot a couple of short films to work on my skills, you know like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills. I live in NYC so I have a lot of resources available to me. But I also have to give up a well paying job for no security and I don't have a wife to support my career change. Also, cost of living in NY is not cheap. Hopefully I will meet some cool people at the NYC DVXuser meeting. Maybe get some info on how others are making it.

By the way. Congrats on the carreer change. You won't regret it. You will look back and think you were silly for not doing it sooner. I know that I will :rolleyes:

Well, I started the order process this evening. Here's what I'm ordering:

The DVX (of course)
Schneider Optics UV Filter
5 tapes (I have a bunch more floating around here somewhere)
Pelican 1600 hard case

It's enough to get me started... I'm pulling the trigger tomorrow (waiting for a few checks to clear).

Very excited... :)

Edit: Question: When I get the camera and register it... Panny will send me Magic Bullet and the Barry Green's book+DVD along with the rebate, right? That's not something that comes with the camera?

I believe there will be specific instructions in the packaging about a website to go to that will tell you how to obtain the book and bullet. But I could be wrong. I think that's how it works. I got my cam way before this deal was out there. :)

Mine came with the book, dvd and magic bullet in the packaging. The rebate I had to go online for.
 
The software and book used to come in the box. Recently that's changed; Panasonic has changed their distribution/delivery method so now cameras are shipped straight to the dealers from the factory in Japan. So now to get the freebies you have to have Panasonic USA mail them to you.
