Tell me why I shouldn't use Vegas!

I've heard (and seen) plenty of good reasons on why I should use Vegas. Now I'd like to hear all the negatives of using Vegas.

Edit: Also, is it worth getting the bundle with DVD Architect or should I just buy Vegas standalone and buy a seperate program for DVD creation?

You want DVD Architect, if for no other reason that it gives you the Dolby 5.1 encoder, which alone would cost more than DVDA adds to the price. That said, DVDA is extremely powerful and easy to use.

Lessee . . . what would I like to see different about Vegas . . .

I'd like it if effects keyframes would proportionally adjust when you change the length of the clip.

I'd like an option for 3D motion to be clip-based as well as track-based.

But these are more like wish-list items, and not reasons not to use it.

As for actual, bona fide reasons why you shouldn't use it?

You shouldn't use it if your client or employer wants you to use something else.

I don't know of any reason not to use Vegas or Premire,FCP and Avid. They all get the job done it's just a matter of what's more comfortable to you. Unless what David said your employer wants you to use something else

If you really like to work hard to make a program do what you want then you better leave Vegas alone. If you like over-complicated editing and low frame rate previews then you better leave Vegas alone. :D

I switched from Premiere about 6 months ago and I've never looked back. Vegas presents things in a much easier format and works extremely well. Is it frustrating trying to learn how to do things in a different NLE? Sure. But that's not Vegas' fault. I have yet to run into something that the program cannot do or that I take as some sort of major (or even minor) drawback to switching from another NLE to Vegas. You can always download the trial version and try it yourself. I'd definitely get DVD Architect with it. The two used together are just awesome.

Thanks for the advice guys... Then again, I am in a Vegas sub-forum so maybe you're all just biased.

I've used Vegas myself and found it incredibly easy to pick up and start working. I just want to be really sure that I'm not overlooking anything before I make the purchase. Thanks again guys!

Well, it should be stated that it does not currently support DVCProHD internally. That costs you another $200 through a third-party.

Vegas+DVD is an amazingly-priced edit and author application. DVDA effectively gives you tools that make your final product look and perform just like a studio release does. You can find non-academic, retail packaged Vegas+DVD for as low as $475 online.

The only thing I would like to see in Vegas is support for 3D motion.

Vegas has been a pleasure ever since I learnt Vegas 4.0 all by myself as an 11 year old kid. :)

Vegas supports 3D motion and has since Vegas 5.

Yeah, I've seen $475-$500 everywhere I looked. Then I checked B&H: $409.95

How in the world are they selling it for $409.95? I really, really don't want to buy from them. I'd like to buy everything from EVS... But that's a mighty big savings. (Unless they rape you in S&H.)

We don't think Vegas is great because we use it.

We use it because it's great.

Okay, I just had the weirdest deja vu in this thread. Like I've posted this before and seen these exact answers from these people before. And I don't think it's the first time I've had deja vu on DVXUser.

I think I need more sleep. :(

3D text, right? I am talking about support for 3d tracking and stuff. Have I missed out on something?

Yeah, I'd say you're missing something serious. Vegas 4 didn't have it, but Vegas 5 had 3D track motion, and that was released almost two years ago.

I buy almost everything from B&H because they're local to me. I have no problems with them and have never been raped on either product price or shipping when I've had them ship items.

Nothing wrong with buying at B&H -- they're an excellent dealer! If they have what you want at the price you're willing to pay, go for it.

As far as why not to use Vegas -- well, the main reason would be if you insisted on using a Macintosh. But if you're on the PC, Vegas is a superb editor. Would be the ultimate if they'd add HVX support, but for DV there's no way I'd use anything else, Vegas is it.

David,

Do you know if you can get the 'Dolby 5.1 encoder' as an upgrade? I currently use Vegas 6.0 with the '+DVD'.

And BTW, I loved your video tutorial on 24P basics!

Gary,

Are you a student? Or could you be at the local community college? The Academic discount is substantial for Vegas.

You can buy the encoder separately, but last I checked it was $280.

But relax -- +DVD includes it.

I already have Vegas 6.0. I'm sorry, I said 'with +DVD', I meant 'without +DVD'. doh!
