i was just wondering what the top-o-the-line brand of filter is...my dvx came with a kit from merkury optics, but i figured if they can't even spell mercury right, how good can these be?

i just paid a grip for the camera, so i want the best glass protecting it...sound off guys....

oh yea, and i noticed the camera making a clunk noise when i tilted it back and forth...is something broken? it seems to work ok, but it sounds crazy...any ideas??

Hahaha
Nice.

You should be okay with any decent GLASS filter.
Tiffen, Hoya, B+W, Schneider all make good ones.
Here's a link to a Tiffen Filter
Here's a link to a Schneider Filter

Not sure what to tell you about that.
It makes a clunk noise? That doesn't sound good.
Hopefully someone else will have some ideas.

Depending on what filter you are looking at: if you want a good polarizing filter, go for the Käsemann version, I believe Schneider/B+W and Heliopan have versions like that. Expect to pay about $200 to $400 for one.

Huh? You asked for the best filter BRANDS, and that's what was answered by Luis and I.

It really depends on what you want the filter for. Each filter has its own purpose. If it's simple glass you want to protect the lens then like Luis said, anything like Tiffen and upwards will do.
The next filters you might want to look at (since their effect can't be duplicated or corrected in post), are UV/HAZE and POLARIZER ones. Naturally, they get more expensive than simple glass.
You could do with basically two filters: a UV/HAZE and a CIRCULAR POLARIZER, getting the best ones you can afford, personally I'd go like this:

1) Tiffen
2) B+W / Schneider
3) Heliopan

And like I mentioned, a Käsemann version of the polarizer is about as good as it gets.

awesome - thanks vidled + luis

as a majority of my video is shot in the snow i've already learned the value of a Polarizer, even if it is built by illiterate greymarket elves (MerKury)

i appreciate all the patience afforded to retards like me on this forum, so thanks guys...we all have to start somewhere

You're right - we do all have to start somewhere -
and most of us started from the same place of knowledge (of lack of)....
so don't put yourself down, even in good fun.

No patience necessary - and no shame in asking questions.

You can get some really good deals on new Tiffen and Hoya filters on ebay

I definitely agree. I got all of my filters (Schneider/B+W, Heliopan, Hoya and Tiffen) second hand on eBay and payed them a fraction of the price. They all came mint or close to mint. Ebay is a very good shopping option for filters IMHO.

It would be poetic to have the forum itself fooled into a clunk hazing.

Ebay is my first choice, as well... although I've found myself migrating to 4x4's as of late, instead of the 72mm.

I've found that there are NO local places to get them, which ticks me off. They only stock the 3x3's (usable to a point) and up to 52mm at the local camera shops. They keep looking at me funny whenever I ask for a 72mm.

*sigh*

I just sold some 72mm's that I haven't used in a while on this board, actually. I hope that they make the buyer happy!
