DVXuser, You're Our Only Hope!

Kirk Gillock

Rebel with a cause
Last year DVXuser saved lives by putting helmets on over 500 students heads and helped take an entire school to the movies. (How many forums can say that?) Here's the latest project, which is even bigger!

As we all know Education (and Barry Green's DVX book) is the answer to all our problems. Recently I visited some villages and discovered schools lacking even the most basic supplies. Desks and chairs were broken or missing (see photo). One school was fortunate to have a Sound Lab but the headphones were all broken (see 2nd photo). Another school had 4 computers, but 3 of them were broken years ago. The last school I visited had a lot of pre-school students but no playground equipment. If you could have witnessed it you would be posting this appeal as well.

The Goal:
To buy desks, chairs, and backpacks and fill them with books, paper, pens, and everything a student needs. More information and photos can be found at www.isara.com.

Here's How You Can Help:
FREE - Setup a small Isara fund raiser in your neighborhood. (Ex: Wet t-shirt competitions are always a big hit!)

FREE - Find a business to advertise on Isara. (One ad can buy alot of desks and chairs.)

NOT FREE - Donations are always welcome and every bit helps! (Ex: $2.50 can buy either a chair or a backpack.)

FREE - If you don't have time or can't afford to help, passing this info to friends and family is always appreciated.

I know this is sounding like a broken record (Isara this! Isara that!) and the Mods are deciding if my posts can be classified as SPAM, but this post is just another thread trying to make visitors feel good. (Like a monkey video. Speaking of, why aren't there more monkey videos?) So, even if you can't help, you can feel good watching the progress being made.

Thank you and let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Because of this.

Thanks, but the world would be a horrible place if there were a bunch of annoying PK's running around. I can't even stand myself.

You're such a LONER, pk... Have there been any other takers for Unit 4D?

:D

thartley - lol :) Actually a nice American couple are renting it for 3 months. The naked bike rides down the hallway will have to wait. :(

Shaw - thanks :)

PK,
My honest feeling is this. They live in a village, schools will look like crap. Hell, I live in the United States of America and went to a school that looked damn close to what those pictures look like. If they want better for themselves then they should do something about it. The sad thing is that sometimes it's just not that simple, I understand that. So, my donation was made. Spend it well PK. The world changes with a ripple and your efforts will help many.

Coffee - I agree with you. The thing I want to avoid is having a foreigner (Santa Claus) go into these schools, with a truck load of goodies, to save the day. That's not going to do them any good.

I'm a firm believer in "Give a person a fish and they eat for one day. Teach them to fish and they eat every day." That is why this project has Thai people taking care of everything. The schools must make an effort to improve themselves, Thai students are actively seeking sponsors, Thai businesses are donating books and pens, and Thai people will make the actual trip to schools to donate everything (not me). The only thing I've done is write this appeal for extra help since, even though Thai people are VERY generous and have donated a lot, one DVXuser donation is equal to about 39 Thai donations. Because of the whole exchange rate thing :)

I wrote (and deleted) a loooong explanation as to why they are in the situation they are in, but the fact of the matter is they need help and the opportunities they have are a fraction of the opportunities we Americans have. Yes, the US has poor schools too and I eventually hope to start programs there, but for right now we should do all we can (in every area of the world) to make sure the gap between the rich and poor doesn't keep getting bigger and bigger.

Coffee your donation will buy a lot of good over here. Thank you. And thank you to the others who have donated. It will be spent well.

Off topic: How much is one of those HVX things? :)

Here's a photo of the 100 backpacks we bought (95 baht = $2.50/ea). The goal is to buy 500 and fill them with school supplies.

Last Saturday about a dozen students visited Thai businesses asking for donations and school supplies to place inside the backpacks. The kids did a great job and we all ate pizza afterwards.

I'm shocked how far a dollar goes over there.
My wife had to get a backpack not too long ago, and I think it cost us something like $30 here.

For that much - you could get 12 kids over there a backpack.

You're doing great work PK - keep it up.

I think we need to start a new policy here at DVXUser.
Every person who asks what the 'clunk' from their camera is has to donate $5 to the Isara fund.

Everyone who asks how they can get a film look for their first project before they put a tape in the camera has to donate $10 to the Isara fund.

Any other ideas?
:)

How about $10 for every question that could be answered with a simple click of the search button?

$20 if they start a new thread to ask that question.

When a Wookie in a tux speaks, people listen. Good ideas, Luis.

How about a dime for every John Hudson post? CHAA CHING!!!! :)

PK - In all seriousness - is there a preferred method of donating?
I know you have paypal thing set up to take credit cards and the like, but doesn't that eat up a percentage of the donation in fees?

Is there some better way to donate to Isara? Or I guess - is there a way that's best for you?
Considering how much even a few bucks can seem to get you over there - it's a shame to lose another backpack for a student to a Paypal fee.

You know what I mean?

Well, Paypal serves a purpose. What would be the alternative... using a credit card?... sending a check? Are there not fees incorporated into those methods of payment?

I suppose you could make it easier for him by setting up Isara on direct deposit from your place of employment. :cheesy: Aaaargh! Please bring back back the quality smilies!

I was just wondering if there was some other form of donation - that's all.
That and I didn't want PK's thread to die a lonely death.

By the way - Terry - use the force -

The smilies are there for those who can grasp them.
