Low cost sound equipment

I tried to get a package deal at B&H, but they could not do anything worth while in the way of price. I am learning about this marketplace. I do have to say the folks at Field Production have gone out of their way and have been very helpfull.

b&h are no the right place for small people , they are not flexible enouth
try regular audio dealers ask for quote then send the lowest offer to everyone and see what happen - usially you will be surprise :-)

Yep, B&H is just a huge volume dealer. They have some discounted price for items they can secure quanity deals in. Everything else is the straight up listed price, no package deals. They don't care if you spend $10 or $10,000 there. Either way, they aint gonna remember you once the sale is over.

Speciality audio houses like Coffey, Trew, Gotham, or Full Compass will give you amazing deals if buy a bunch of equipment at once or are a regular customer. They will also treat you right when you have a question or problem later (ie my dealer provides me temporary replacement equipment for free while my equipment is in for servicing).

Although I am not familiar with Field Production Resource it sounds like you got a good package deal.

Cheers

So, since I have not done the "package deal before, how do you go about it? Did you just get a list of items you want, give your price, and they say yes or no? How does that work? I am working on buying a bunch of equipment and would obviuosly like some good deals....I am not very business savy though, did you haggle it out?

wabiit said exactly what I was gonna say.

dog666...

when I was at coffey sound, I would deal with someone like yourself by first finding out what you need, and what you are willing to spend to get it. From there I usually determine if it's even possible, and if it is, then I would figure out what the best gear for your dollar is. The places wabbit listed are great places. Of course, depending on where you live will dictate where you go.

dave, i live in south africa and there is NO ONE good over here to purchase gear from. they all want ridiculous amounts for gear i could buy even from b&h for way less.

do you (or wabbit or anyone else) know of any dealers that are able to ship overseas or anything like that? im just waiting to make a big purchase of stuff, and just need to place to help me out.

i figure you're the best person to ask..

I think Oleg has some experience in this situation. There was a discussion on RAMPS recently on the best way for European to buy sound equipment like Sound Devices from the USA. Same info would apply to South Africa. Check it out.

Cheers

And, to forestall the question: RAMPS = rec.arts.movies.production.sound , a usenet newsgroup. You can get there via Google Groups, if you don't have a news service.

I found the thread: "Sound Devices in Europe: Why so expensive?" When you go to RAMPS put that in the search. Do it now, it says the thread (or the original poser's question...not sure how that works) will be removed on Feb 20 (tomorrow).

Bascially, the gist of the thread says to have a friend in the states buy the equipment and send it to you in your country. I have no idea of how the law applies to this transaction but I wouldn't sweat it (which is not to say I am saying break the law, just saying "HYPOTHETICALLY" it wouldn't be a big deal).

Good luck
