theres a lotta people in this world that didnt get their @$$ beat enough by their parents when they were kids. Its a lose-lose situation. You think your helping your kid by not "hitting" them (by hitting, i dont mean to a bloody mess) but then they grow up and turn into POS people who think they are never wrong and have no respect for anyone.

Thanks mom and dad for putting me in line when i thought i was king ****.

Sorry for the vent, i just cant stand adolesent kids who think that because they can speak, everyone should listen.

Anyone with me? or is this just a one man show?

WOW! What prompted this rant?

I definitely think times have changed. Growing up, it wasn't uncommon to get spanked, punished, etc. Somewhere along the line disciplining your child can get your child taken away from you. I think there is a clear line where discipline becomes abuse and it should never be tolerated.

That being said, I don't think just arbitrarily telling parents to hit their kids more is an acceptable way to bring up talking about the social changes of what is acceptable "disciplining" and what is not, what is in, what is out.

I don't consider you one either! My parents never hit me either, and I turned OK.....I'm still only 19 though so I hope I don't go down the crapper now.....
 
Are you guys talking about an attention-getting swat on the butt or full-blown fisticuffs? The term "hit" seems to imply more than an open-palm spank on the butt.

same here. i'm 19 as well and i've turned out ok. i also hope all goes well in my life from here on. i have a friend that was hit by his parents and he's in a psych ward now. i've seen firsthand the effects of this and its horrible.
 
Yeah I mean I think as John poetically said anyone who "hits" a kid is a pussy and should be locked up. Discipline is something completely different.

im not talking beat the kid to a degree where he cant walk, im not even saying hit the kid in the face, im talking about a good smack in the ass to get the kids head outta it. There are kids that need a spanking. Not 7 year old Billy who has no idea when something he's done is wrong. Im talking those kids in the "brat" age. Just hitting those jr. high years. If you've never been spanked, or hell, even beaten up by other kids, then i think you have no idea what im talking about.

first off, if your a woman, then thats a different story. Hitting a woman or little girl makes you a pussy.

and i dont know what part of liberal america you're from, but saying if you spank a kid your a pussy, then either you A) have never had a bratty kid B) never took care of a bratty kid, and consider yourself one of the lucky few.

i went after my dad when i was 13, tried to throw a punch at him for some stupid reason, and he laid me out. I learned two of the greatest lessons ive learned so far. Dont screw with your fathers, and respect others, no matter how wrong you think they are.

If by being hit you mean abusively, yeah thats totally messed up. If you mean he was spanked for setting fire to the bushes, then I hardly think that would put him in a psych ward.

Frankly none of us are really qualified to talk about this subject with any authority other than what we think is right and wrong and how we grew up.

I think you're onto something Terry. An attention-getting swat on the bottom does not have to be a violent thing. It is more a, well, attention getter. If it hurts your hand, it is sure as hell too much for the child. On the other hand, the new age crap like time out doesn't work either. But to "hit" a child with the intention to inflict pain is just wrong. I used spanking very infrequently because it broke my heart to have to spank my daughter. But my wife put up with no ****. That's not to say she EVER mistreated my daughter either, she just believed that sometimes a quick swat on the butt was required to get the child's attention.

Positive reinforcement is ALWAYS a better method of behavior modification than negative reinforcement. While I would never condone mistreating a child (or any other human being for that matter) I believe that sometimes you need to get their attention. There is a great difference, though between attention-getting and child abuse.
