The perfect production/playback monitor is...

The Sony MFM-HT75w 17" HD/Computer Monitor.

It has Component HD in, 1280x768 resolution, 800:1 contrast, good blacks and is small enough to fit inside a Pelican 1550 case. The only real drawback is that response time is a little slow, there is a slight amount of ghosting but it's tolerable for the price, size and performance. It also makes a fantastic playback monitor from a powerbook.
You can hook the camera up via component and the monitor up via DVi and when you want to look over a shot you just switch inputs and BAM! Full HD playback from FCP.

All this for $599.00
I got mine at Frys.

And with the built in TV tuner you can watch the game during lunch.

evin,

when using component, are you referring viewing straight from the camera(not from fcp) and for fcp/powerbook editing, use dvi and fcp's digital cinema preview desktop setting?

Two things...

1. Neither of those two have DVI input, although the Sony has HDMI which you can get an adapter for.

2. Neiher of those two can fit in a Pelican 1550 case. The 19" Sony would barely fit without the base but then what would you do with it.

The image quality/price is close between them all and 17" Vs. 19" is not as important to me as portbility and the direct hook up to a Laptop for playback.

There's a ton of dvi to component adapters evin =)

Personally I'd just stick with the Panasonic keep it clean and all Panasonic ooooh yeaaaa baby.

Oh, I soo miss What-A-Burger from Texas. Here (indiana) all we've got is White Castles. I'm always in the mood for a Double Double at In-N-Out burger... Probably cause we don't have them here, either.

Hey Evinsky,

Are you still using this monitor? How accurate is it? Can you line up bars from the HVX with certainty? I just saw it for $499 at J&R here in NY.

Anyone else using this? Seems like a great alternative if it really can perform.

Calibration

Calibration

Thanks for the advice on the monitor Evin. I just picked up the sony MFM-HT75w and I love it. Playing back HD straight out the second DVI port on my G5 and it looks gorgeous. I am so happy not to mirror out firewire to a camera and tv anymore!!!

Please post your monitor calibration settings as I am having a hard time getting mine to be right on. This would give me a great starting point. I have also noticed that the inputs look quite different when you mirror out from FCP vs. coming in live from the camera via component. Any thoughts?

Do you have a pic of the monitor in the 1550 case? I picked up one and it fits nice, just not sure what to do with the foam.

Thanks in advance.

Picked one up at Fred Meyer, on sale for $500. Looks greath through component. Finally, everyone gets to see what the hvx is really capturing. The hvx screen is so unimpressive.

Honestly, my only worry is that footage actually looks better on this screen than most, so someone might take the footage to another monitor and go, "hey it doesn't look as nice when we were shooting..."
