Just in case anyone is interested.

I called the Apple store with the same question and they sugested to:

1) buy either of these brands: TDK, Apple's and/or Fuji
2) know the speed of your DVD drive and then purchase the #X speed for the DVD-R to match the DVD drive

When you say "it did not recognize them" do you mean you put it in the PB Superdrive and it spit it back out or you tried to burn it but the program you use to burn (DVDSP3, Toast, etc.) didn't recognize the blank DVD-R as a DVD-R or were you successful in burning the DVD but when you tried to play it back it wouldn't play?

hey Ian,

I meant that when I insert the DVD-R, the computer would not display the DVD icon on the desktop and it would pretend that nothing was inserted.

This is after or before you burn your project onto it? That isn't clear i guess. If before, then of course it won't show up on the desktop because there's nothing on it. If after the burn then maybe (depends on what you used to burn it ie. Toast) then the format might be at fault. Make sure you choose DVD-Rom, if you are using Toast. If you are burning straight out of DVDSP3 then it should work.

Re: DVD-R for 17" PowerBook G4

I just got it figure it out.

The issue was under system preferences: CD & DVDs > When insert a blank CD/DVD (it was set to "ask what to do" so I whent and changed it to "open desktop"... this fixed the problem.

The computer was aparently recognising the drive but was not displaying an Icon at all. And the issue I was having was while inserting a black DVD-R I was not getting any responce from the computer at all.

Thanks for help :)
