RED Mini-Mags Exposed, or just Business As Usual?

Jinnimag is an example of disruption. So what happened to Jannard's love of disruption, when the target is his own company ? Self-righteous defensiveness and lawsuits (business as usual). Why ? Because rebels always make the best dictators. And their mirror always shows up.

Well put. Exactly how I see it. And today's news: Apple’s RED RAW patent challenge dismissed by US patent Office

https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/11...tent-challenge-dismissed-by-us-patent-office/

It reminds me of a Ralph Waldo Emmerson quote, "When you strike at a king, you must kill him."

Seems like a coda of sorts to this sordid affair.

Goodbye JinniMag. Apparently as of August, JinniMag is no more. It was entertaining while it lasted. From his facebook page:

"Well, nothing is forever, so was JinniMag.
We bring JinniMag back home to its end. JinniMag leaves to give room to other interesting stuff to grow.
Thank you for being open to new, to accept an alternative, and for appreciating the competition.
Thank you for your trusting JinniMag and for giving it an opportunity to work for you. JinniMag goes away glad, for it opened a tightly closed door. So more can pass through, so you can enjoy benefits of more, rather than less.
It's a farewell for JinniMag, but not for Jinni because what comes next is even more interesting! "

Yet still the JinniMag is on sale.....

Very curious

IT seems the saga is back for a new season. This time it is not a very small UK company making accessories it is an international behemoth....

It occurred to me that if Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic just ignored Red's patent red would be screwed.

This is all old news, not sure why it’s being bumped. I guess envy? Boredom? Isn’t there already enough online vitriol against RED? The Internet thrives on this BS, while in the real world, actual DPs, many of the world’s most talented, are gladly shooting with REDs and winning awards for photography. This crap makes me think of the 68 year-old man who, each morning at 7:15, pisses on the gravestone of a woman he was briefly married to back in the 70s. Red will crush Nikon like a bug.

As far as the Mini-mag non-controversy goes, media, batteries and card readers for high-end Arri and Sony cinema cameras cost more than my parents paid for their first house! With the Alexa 35, four hours of 4.6K 3:2 Open Gate in ARRIRAW without having to back up any cards will run you $13,440 in media! For the longest time, you also had to pay Sony and ARRI thousands just to access features like anamorphic, high frame rates, RAW, etc., whereas RED charges zero! In fact, according to Arri lens specialist Art Adams, had it not been for RED, we wouldn’t have even had the Arri Alexa, the Canon C100/C300/C500, the Sony F5/F55/F65, the SI 2K, etc. Apple charges hundreds of dollars for SSDs made in China that cost them a couple bucks. What of it? If you’re not earning money with your gear, maybe you’re in the wrong business!

Enjoying my RED Komodo bunches, hoping to pick up a second one soon! BTW, your proposal demonstrates either complete ignorance of the law, or an utter disregard for the law, which may fly among your tiny group of friends but not in a democracy where, for the time being at least, the law still matters. If manufacturers violate RED’s patent, RED isn’t ‘screwed’: they end up back in court, just as it appears Nikon is about to do. Not only that, but it seems that everyone but you is aware that Sony and RED reached an agreement ages ago and that Canon cameras already record compressed RAW internally and that the company has a close working relationship with RED.

You are a fascinating personality Jon. It would be fun to talk to you in person. I find you to be unique and in complete contrast to my personality.

I.e. BMD = Evil corporation. Let's blast them with vitriol. RED = good guys. Leave them alone.

We should tax the bejesus out of billionaires like Grant Petty. That’s not just me speaking - that’s the opinion of the overwhelming majority of Americans, right, left and center. It’s only in the tiny echo chambers in the recesses of the internet where you find people actually defending the rich and powerful and trying to justify an enormous wealth disparity based on deregulation, price gouging, corruption and union busting, where veterans who fought for the country have to struggle to get health care and housing and where medicine costs ten times more than in any other nation on earth.

I agree with Paul. RED is infamous for hosing their customers. Charging more than promised and delivering later than promised, etc. Their accessory ecosystem is a money pit. Yes, they've made important contributions to the industry. But what's the difference between them and BMD? That BMD made its founder into a billionaire a-hole whereas RED's already was one to begin with?

The stage-three tax cuts in Australia also show what happens when greedy billionaires and corporations control a country, where the richest 1% of Australians will save as much as the poorest 65% combined.

In fact, Jannard is a fine person who seldom granted interviews, while Grant Petty loves to boast about his wealth to interviewers. You’re also sadly mistaken about ‘hosing’ customers: I’ve already shown how RED’s accessories are no more expensive than ARRI’s or Sony’s and are often far cheaper! Anyhow, no one’s forcing you to purchase Red-branded accessories. The batteries, media and card reader (in fact, everything you need to begin shooting) are all available from third-party vendors. If you want to talk about gouging, let’s start with Sony’s 640GB CFexpress Type A TOUGH Memory Card, which runs $1,250.00! LOL All DSMC3 bodies: the V-Raptor, Komodo and V-Raptor XL all cost exactly what was stated and were shipped in as timely a manner as possible, given the circumstances. You’re rehashing old news.

So, it would seem that the difference lies in the manner in which Petty gloats about his wealth whereas Jannard does not?

But don't you think that the price point of BMD products has done more to democratize that quality of image processing and codecs?

Their accessory ecosystem is a money pit.

Nothing new. A common profit model existing in other industries as well because these are business/women, not camera operators.

It's also universally accepted that this was RED's industry-response around the late 2000s to ARRI charging for licenses (important extra features).

So you can pay $60K for an ARRI body and a few thousand for licenses or generally $20-$40K for a RED body and another $20K in accessories.

No doubt, we should be able to get more out of all of us, in particular those better off. Bejesus is probably too much because then the earners just leave the country and establish themselves elsewhere as some people and corporations have done. But for sure, we could do better.

Back in the day, the US did have much higher rates. The top tax rate was 90% in 1950. It dropped in 1974 to 71% and 37% today. Of course, no one actually pays those rates, not even people earning under $100k pay what the tables indicate.

I think one issue with RED was they seemed to take advantage of people who didn't know better. Like, they promised cameras at a certain price point and kind of suckered people into investing who maybe didn't realize how much they'd have to put in to make the products fully functional.

Obviously, buyer beware. But it's a similar issue to canon with the R5 in that they hyped its performance but ultimately didn't deliver (at first). Nobody would have been mad at them if only their marketing hadn't been deceptive

Contrast that with BMD, who doesn't even hype their releases before they drop them, and who has always needed very few additional accessories to function, which were always available from 3rd parties. They even started the crazy external usb ssd recording option for people who really wanted to avoid buying expensive media

Then, of course, there's what they've done with Resolve. Look at that price point and expanding feature set. I'm not a Resolve user, but I am an appreciator

I'm very unhappy about the cost of cfexpress type A cards. But there are now a few 3rd party vendors selling them as well, and while they undercut sony prices, it's not by a huge margin. Cfexpress-a are overpriced because they can't be sold in high volumes and probably haven't recouped development costs yet

But also hey - when did you find me defending sony business practices? This whole conversation started merely with the question of why you were so hard on BMD over RED

Also, even i think that Bejesus% is too high of a tax rate. I'd settle for a reasonable tax rate that, most importantly, can't be dodged through tricky maneuvering or laws that advantage holding securities over doing actual work

Your math is a wee bit off: first of all, you neglect to mention the tens of thousands of dollars just for media and batteries required for the Alexa 35. And everything else required to make the camera production ready. But in real life, few will ever actually own one of the several thousand Alexa 35s produced - they’re going to rental houses.

As for the V-Raptor, which excels in just about every category when compared to the Monstro - it costs less than half the Monstro, and accessories - batteries to last 6 hours of recording time, 1TB media, a monitor and PL mount adaptor - run around eight grand. Lenses, follow focus, tripod, gimbal, rails, transmitter, cage, etc. are the cost of doing business in the world of production with any camera.

You’re distorting facts to fit into a grotesque, Boschian version of reality. RED cameras are priced exactly as promised, delivered in a timely manner given the circumstances and no one is being suckered into anything. Weird how you keep using words like suckered, hyped and hosed, which scream BMD bias syndrome.

For what it's worth, I used to own a RED camera but I've never owned any camera, accessory, or software made by BMD

It may shock you, but some of us can formulate opinions without turning the debate into a matter of team sports
