I’m surprisingly overall favorable towards the R5C, not because i don’t see the issues, but because the drawbacks are things i am less worried about.
however, Dynamic Range, while 12+ is nothing to frown at, is a bit less than i prefer. i feel a Camera really hits true “cine” status in the high 13+ stop dr range. So, despite me feeling comfortable with all the drawbacks, it may actually come right back to Canon’s lack of DR yet again. idk, i was beginning to become curious about the possibility of iso100 raw video, and gain another stop. but at $4,400 doesn’t seem like they’d put such nuanced improvements in there.
i feel if one is going to design a cine camera without all the modern expectations, then they at least have to blow the seat out with the base image quality, and 12+ stops DR doesn’t quite inspire a buy without IBIS or Internal ND. one of those would’ve been helpful to compensate for the lack of DR.
That kind of means the R5C is just an R5 with the IBIS plate glued to a heat sink and a fan, but 8K 60p is a hack that makes Magic Lantern upgrades feel conservative. lol.
that said, if Canon can add a low iso raw option with more DR, then i’ll buy back into the Canon brand. but if the 1DC taught me anything, don’t give faith to Canon.
