Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

I've read somewhere that this thin metal plate can be removed with a mini-screwdriver (and lots of care with the diminutive screws), e.g. when one needs to clan the front end of the lens.

I've also read that the purpose of this thing is to protect against light reflection within the lens.

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever tried to shoot footage with this little plate removed... Any noticeable consequences ? And no I haven't removed it and lost the screws, I'm just being curious ! ;)

With a good matte box or lens shade, I doubt removing the anti-reflection plate would make a lot of difference. However, with just using the DVX's standard lens hood, it probably helps to cut down a bit of veiling flare when shooting into the light.

And also, since it limits unusable light from entering the lens, it should in-fact give the usable light a better opportunity to resolve a sharper image -- more clarity. Sort of like turning the house lights off when playing the movie at your local theater, only in reverse ;D.

Just an opinion of course.

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

was taking a look at the dvx100A and it doesn't have this anti-reflection plate...how come???

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

the dvx100a has this plate also.

i have taken it off. painless.

first day i used mine outside some dirt shot up on the lens. oops!

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

Really? I could have sworn the 100A has the plate part but no clear "window" which the original had? or did it? Now I'm wondering...I'll check the 100A again.

Thanks

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

The 100a does have the plate, however I have seen advertisements (usually on ebay) that show the dvx without the plate, maybe that's what you saw. I am way too paranoid to take off the cover, i took it off once, just to clean the lens, but I always have it on when I shoot as well as at least a good UV filter. I guess that's being extra cautious, but better safe than sorry.

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

Of course it does have the plate. It just thought at first it didn't look too good, which is why I started this topic about the practical consequences of taking it off. But I guess no one's done it, except for Lyons Den...

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

So I took a closer look at the 100A again (my brand new one actually..lol) and there doesn't seem to be a plate..well not how I remember the 100 having it anyways...there's the plate with the small screws which looks like it can be removed but not clear window...hopefully the picture I took shows that...should I be concerned???

Thanks.

Ahem... Barry... Now I'm concerned about *you*... ;D You say "there doesn't seem to be a plate" when your picture shows it full screen... ??? And what do you mean by "clear window" ?

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

thats how my 100A looks. I didnt buy a 100 so I dont know if there ever was another layer of glass in front of the lens where you are pointing through in that photo.

so basically im totally confused. what i see there is what i have and i would venture everyone else has. i dont think anything is out of the ordinary.

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

Yeah, I have a 100 and there never was a piece of glass there, it was always just a rectangular "mask" of metal. I don't think there's anything out of the ordinary here.

Re: Rectangular cut-out plate in front of the lens

Hey guys...

Monglane..i meant that i thought there was a clear piece of glass/plastic mounted in the metal plate where the cutout is...I could have sworn remembering there was one..but have recieved confirmations that there was never one...sorry for the confusion.
