Third Monitor

I have an iMac 24". I have a second monitor hooked up using the dvi adaptor and use it to expand my desktop when editing with FCP. I also have a third monitor hooked up using the firewire to a mini dv deck to an SD monitor to see my image from the canvas full screen. But now I want HD full screen on a monitor.

Now how could I see my image (canvas) full screen in HD on a monitor without losing my second monitor with the desktop? I know I can use a dvi to hdmi to an HDTV, but then I lose the second monitor that uses the dvi out and it wouldn't be full screen.

How can I run three monitors, one being the extension of the desktop and the third one being the FCP canvas in true HD?

From what I have read on the subject (and I am no expert at all) it seems you can't export hd video through firewire, which is your only other way out of the computer besides your port that you are using for your second monitor. All the hardware I have found to do such a thing are pci-cards that need to go into a desktop, which the imac does not have (unless I am mistaken?). I recently purchased an intensity pro card for my mac pro and am still have some problems with it... but it was by far the cheapest solution I found to have realtime uncompressed HD on a monitor.

My guess is it is not possible to do what you want with an Imac, but maybe it is possible to do firewire into an hd cam and out with component or hdmi? I would look into that but it seems tricky.

because you are on an iMac instead of a Mac Pro, your only option is to use an ioHD to send your signal to an HD monitor.

The only HD format that can be previewed by firewire AFAIK is HDV. You never said what type of footage you are editing but unless it is HDV I think the ioHD might be your best bet since I believe it uses a firewire 800 to connect with the computer.

on a mac pro it's as simple as adding another video card. i used to run 4 monitors on an older g4. on an imac... i dunno.

The only problem w/adding another video card is Color, Motion and some FCP plugins won't work properly if more than one video card is installed.
