saw this film last night - it was very enjoyable - not necessarily the best film of the year - but lots of fun no less.

We ended up being late so had seats right up the front (the sore neck seats)

the noise (or grain) in the darker sections of the film was OFF THE SCALE.

not a problem for me as it kind of lends a filmic feel to the movie (whatever that means) - but with all this striving for clean images (hey i like clean blacks too) it was a real eye opener to see this amount of grain in such a high profile movie.

maybe we need to reasses - as a forum - the idea that noise is evil.

There were some noisy scenes in Milk as well, and of course the Wrestler has that nice Super16 grain. I love it.

People far too often forget the difference of film grain vs. digital chunky grain. Digital noise can be ugly beyond belief, film grain is a different ballgame.

I don't mind grain at all. I mean, with all the money and tools at their disposal, I'm pretty sure they could have made the film pretty damn clean.

I think it's an artistic choice and I don't mind it when used properly.

I dunno...Ive seen noisy films plenty of times to the point where I thought it was distracting. But my preference in all of those viewings was sitting up close and personal to the screen just like you did. If you sat a few rows back you would not have noticed it so much (trust me…it does make a difference).

I understand very well the difference between analog film grain vs digital noise….I like them both in their own ways. This may sound strange but I like the noise from a really high resolution digital cinema camera as opposed to what we get from our consumer/prosumer cams. I watched Miami Vice and there were certain night scenes where I really liked the noise pattern in the image. It was a really tight pattern grain. (Watch some of the trailers online to see what I’m talking about). I tried duplicating that effect but realized it must have been the camera because as soon as the muzzle flashes went off the picture turned sparkling clean for those quick shots.
