What if somebody wants to sell your footage along with stock footage?

someone approached me recently, they are about to start selling stock footage and animations on DVD's and will be doing some heavy marketing. how would you go about charging for this? should you negotiate to get a percentage of the sales or just charge a flat rate? I imagine it will be sold online as well.

i'm always skeptical about getting percentages of the sales because i have no idea ho wi would keep up with it.

So this person is going to buy your footage and resell it on the web? Why would you not just sell the footage yourself on one of the many websites that will host your stock footage (Revostock, Istock, Artbeats, etc.)?

Edit: I see they are also selling it on DVD. Most stock houses work on a percentage basis- in my experience, you get 25% to 60%, depending on the stock house. You might want to consider an outlet
with a track record and following.

yea, thats the thing, this company is just starting out so they don't have a track record. with the bigger companies, how does one keep track of how much money or percentage you are entitled to?

Make sure that you retain the right to use your footage without incumberances or fees for your own projects.

You can go to the companies site and look at your sales. Some send an email each time a clip sells. Pretty easy to track.

Most have restrictions on what else you can do with the clips. For instance, you might be allowed to sell them on your own website or use them in your productions, but not allowed to sell on their competitors site.
