Academy Awards: In Memoriam (and Oscar's Discussion Thread)

EDIT: I don't think Slumdog should have won almost everything.

I mean, there were a lot of better movies in a lot of the categories...

I'm just disappointed.

But the presentation of the show was awesome!

Zak, know you had your hands tide but outstanding, proffessional, moving work nonetheless. Hope it leads to even bigger / better feathers in your hat.

Well done sir.

Hey, great work Zak...especially considering all the **** they gave you. I would have liked to hear more sound bytes, I think, but I know you didn't have much say. Moving, nonetheless, and I would expect nothing less from you.

"Defiantly?"

Sorry for the defiantly, i sounded a little rude, i came straight from the TV to here to vent my anger...haha. I just think there were a couple of cases where there was something else that was better. But if i give examples others might disagree, it's just one person's opinion...

well... there you have it... I wish I had a better song to work with and one simple screen and a producer willing to fight for what we were doing. this *needed* to end on cool hand luke, but...

anyway, my sincerest apologies to those that look forward to this segment every year. we blew it. the multiple screens and camerawork killed it in my opinion. to quote christian bale, "IT'S F*CKING DISTRACTING!!!"

Yeah, the camera work on that piece and the multi screens made it so hard to focus. Fortunately, it's obvious that at some point about 2/3 through some producer ran into the control room and shouted "knock it off with the ****ing jib moves!"

Great work anyway... at least you got the experience of doing it!

Ah I want to see this! I was waiting for the Oscars, usually we get them on TV here in New Zealand but this year it's only on cable or whatever you call it over there, don't have that. Lame! Hopefully there will be some clips online as I have deliberately avoided all the spoilers so far...LOL. Might just have to read the results...sad. :( (Edit: Thanks, youtube )

Zack, I liked it. Good job!
Asfor Rourke... As good as is performance was, it is nowhere close to what Sean Penn did in Milk. Well deserved oscar for Sean. As for best film, it would be a close battle between Slumdog and Milk. And Slumdog wins not because its better than Milk, but because of our World, today. We need uplifting stories, we need hope, we need dreams coming true. SLumdog Millionaire simbolizes the essence of Hollywood- And, may I say, it did it wonderfully. Every nominee is a winner, IMO. Only one that was a bit bellow the rest was Frost/Nixon, but, then again, it was a solid, entertaining film. I was surprised was with Wall-E not winning best sound design!

Nice job on the edit. I agree, the camera moves were quite distracting. Wish I could just sit down and watch the center screen again to see it.

I think you mentioned on here though that those camera jib elements were pretaped. Were they pre-edited or did they mix on the spot and realize it wasn't working?

I did really like your edit on Paul Newman though, specifically using the frames on the window to work the transition and the two pool playing shots.

Kudos.

By the way, did I miss Heath Ledger? I haven't followed the thread totally through but did his family not want him remembered in Memorium?

Heath Ledger was in last year's tribute. the people I fought to have in this year's (and lost) included..

1. Brad Renfro
2. Harvey Korman
3. Patrick McGoohan
4. George Carlin

...and there were many others. it really kinda irritated me that they were so adamant that "Vampira" who has one real film credit be included but that Renfro be snubbed. James Whitmore was the only last minute addition.

i'm sure the video for the center screen will end up on youtube soon. i just have a feeling.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW5XT9cNgZk&fmt=22

It was great to see Isaac Hayes in that clip from Escape From New York. A fantastic actor and musician.

Nice job with the edit, Zak.

Congrats on being a part of this Zak, it speaks well of your talent that you were asked to work on it and you can't beat yourself up for things out of your control.

Could not agree more with your comment. What surprised me is in what was such a low concept year they would try to over complicate something that is so intrinsically moving on its own. I was watching on a crappy hotel TV and I almost missed several people and had to move closer.

I also like to see a little more of the acting chops of the person, what made them special. I am sure it was there, but all the camera movement obscured it.

They also dropped the ball on the film score segment where they kept shooting members of the orchestra. Isn't the point of a film score to show how it effects the footage rather than staring at a guy playing a trombone.

i'm sure the video for the center screen will end up on youtube soon. i just have a feeling.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW5XT9cNgZk&fmt=22

Exactly l!!!!

Great job Zak. It must suck to bang your head against the wall like that. I agree with just about everything being said about the camera moves and omissions. Speaking of, didn't anyone at the academy realize that without Arthur C Clarke we would never have seen 2001?
