Need Urgent Help on .MOV files

Hi there,

I have been searching for a solution to this for ages, then remembered about my trusty DVX users!

I recently rented a Canon XL A1 to film a short film. I sent the tape back with the camera so they could put it on DVD for me and it came back a while later on 5 dvds as .MOV files. I downloaded quicktime but when I tried to open the files I would only get sound and no image. Then I tried downloading Quicktime Alternative. This enabled me to play the file in Windowns Media Player but still just sound, no picture. I got the same problem when importing it into Adobe Premiere Pro.

The urgency of this thread is related to the fact that I need to get this short edited within about 3 weeks because I have a university intervew coming up.

I need to find a way to be able to play these .MOV files into Adobe Premiere Pro quick time (pun not intended)!. Also, I have a PC with Windows XP.

Please Help!

Dan

Edit:
I am willing to upload one of my clips to see if anyone else can open it. The files are pretty big though.

Firstly - I hope you still have the tapes!

Will the .mov files play on a MAC? (this is a test for you to check them out).

How did they get the clips from the tape to the DVD?
I am guessing via Final Cut Pro. If so , the movs will not be compatible with Premiere (without a plugin) and you may need to capture the tape as .avi.

Try installing QT Pro in your system first but ultimately I think you will need to recapture as avi for the best editing experience on your PC.

I use a plugin to allow DVCPro HD .mov files from a MAC to work on a PC but I dont think that will help you.

I spoke to the man that created the files for me and he says that the .MOVs are container files for MPEG4s. Does this mean anything to anyone?

Both .avi and.mov are containers for their contents. It means that these file types can contain one of any number of CODECs and compressions. Not all are compatible cross platform or with other editing applications. Your .movs are mp4 compressed. That is why you have an issue in Premiere Windows with them.

Convert the .movs to Type 2 avi and you should be good to go with Premiere (Windows). The conversion often just repackages the content into a diferent container (and makes it compatible)

I would be recapturing considering you have a deadline.

How exactly do you capture as an AVI? I dont see that as an option in PRE PRO.

I think I'm running into the same issue. I captured HDV footage in Pre Pro on a Mac and the other person is going to be editing it on a PC with Pinnacle. Pinnacle supports AVi and Quicktime I think.

Capture on a PC if you are going to edit on a PC .

I wonder why you would do it any other way considering you then have to transfer very large files across platform.

BTW - you missed some vital info. (avi and movs are just containers and there can be many incompatible "flavours" with in them.)
