FloLight LED500 Light Review

Dan Brockett is one of the first customers and he's building a softbox/speedring setup for his fixtures, even before I have a chance to do our own. He indicated that even though there was quite a hot spot with the softbox / spot fixture combo he did try that the results were pretty good.

Hi guys:

This thread already dropped off of the face of the earth but here are my impressions from about a month ago when I received the LED 600s, one 5600k spot and one 5600k flood. Will post speedring pictures as soon as welder is done with it.

I got my spectrophotometer working again.

I'll see if I can get some spectrographic readings of the FloLight LED's and the CoolLight LEDs when the CoolLights come in.

That might provide some empirical evidence of what to expect from each one.

Hi Dean,

Tell us more about this device. I've been under the impression that you needed complete isolation to use one properly. In other words, even in a room with the lights out, blinds drawn, etc.--there could still be contamination from reflections off surfaces.

Also, the ones I've seen aren't portable at all and pretty darn expensive. How big is it and can you carry it around with you? I'd love to get one if you could actually get one thats reliable and portable too.

Hi Richard...

This is a "Spectrocam" I got several years ago. It was designed to read test prints in order to "profile" printers and get accurate color prints. But it also has the ability to take emission measurements to calibrate monitors and analyze light sources.

Its capabilities were restricted when there was a threat of a lawsuit over patent infringement, and the ability to read emissions was removed from the device. I was lucky to have one that pre-dated that. I think it's been taken off the market since then.

It was about $1,200, I think.

To get a perfect reading you have to completely isolate everything and make all measurements in a totally absorbtive environment. No reflections. But for practical measurements that I would do it's not necessary. It comes out close enough.

Fortunately It works with my MacBook Pro and OSX. I was lucky the software jumped the gap from OS 9.

It still needs AC power to run, so it's not perfectly portable. And it's a little klutzy in that it needs to read the emissive properties off a white reflective surface. Even with the limitations it sure beats guessing.

CRI measurements

To compare CRI accurately, what are the ideal chroma X,Y data values?
