I dont think people here are open to internet memes.

Philip Bloom has become a respectable and popular figure on the internet for his thorough reviews of camera equipments. He is a 'celebrity' in a way in this particular field of the industry and on the internet. People will find something particular about him. People will either respect or criticize him or whatever they want to say. Can you really stop it? No...

I found nothing offensive about this thread I think jujufactory's intention is just for the fun of it, he's not defaming him or spreading lies. I guess he just found Philip's choice of words in describing a "great piece of glass" quite amusing to him.

Trying to stop juju is like trying to stop people from talking about Beyonce's dress from the Grammys...

This kind of humor is not universally acceptable and is actually insulting in some cultures.
I suggest you make fun of something else in another venue.
This is a technical forum on an international forum. I personally find this out of taste.
Anyway, i already said my views in my report to the mods.

Its the written equivalent of me for instance, vocally explaining something and instead of getting the value of the information i'm saying, the listener mimics my speech and makes fun of the way I talk.
Its patronizing and is not a decent thing to do.

this is not funny at all. :D

but Beyonce is such a beautiful wonderful piece of glass :)

and how do you pronounce BEYONCE?

Some of it is harmless humor, but some of it seems a little mean spirited. It does nothing for the members of dvxuser and I think it should be closed. I have benefited from Bloom's reviews and I would hate to anger him away from this forum. It would be similar to making fun of Barry Green.

It should be moved to Cafe ala DVX then.

I guess a lot of you would find Russell Peters and Danny Bhoy very offensive.

Geez you guys take too seriously...

If you're a known figure on the internet, you'd expect to get all kinds of praises and disses. If you are scared of that then maybe you shouldn't 'expose' yourself.

I doubt Philip would find this offensive, I bet it would be amusing to him that people actually pay attention to his reviews that much :D

lmao car3o.

anyway notice how phill didnt post he isnt bothered, however wrong forum this should be moved to the cafe!

And yes Juju why there isnt really anything offensive it is kinda pointless and not relevent in this thread, and also you have multiple threads open asking for advice, if you want to be taken seriously by others on this forum then this is the wrong way to go about it,

plus if anyone is able to offer adivce on the ex1 etc etc, it will be phill posting =]

Jeez lighten up guys - some of you are acting like pompous school girls each competing to feign more shock and outrage at the humour presented here than the other.

I for one was never enormously impressed with Bloom's 'reviews' and don't really consider him the beacon of amazingness that some seem too. (I'm sure he's a nice guy of course!) In any case a little satire is quite harmless in itself and a po-faced 'thats not funny' reaction is in itself - even more amusing than the jokes, if not for their own absurdity.

Obviously those who did not laught at the joke were those who were not looking at it through a great great piece of glass. If you look at it through my piece of glass with proper backfocus adjustment (which can be se separately) you get the joke the way it was meant to be understood: a tibute to Bloom and his fantastic lettuce and its marvelous great great piece of glass. Fantastic!!

Yeah, I'm sorry - I don't want to come across like I have some kind of sense of humour failure. But you have to appreciate that if someone joins a forum and then right off the bat posts something like that in two separate threads, then follows up by ripping on that same particular person - you could see how that might be interpreted.

I'm pretty sure Phil would find all this hilarious - but to be honest I would have had the same reaction if it had been about any regular contributor to this forum.

Can we get back to talking about 35mm adapters now?

I'm still trying to decide between the lettuce and the JeeBlade. It seems to me the Lettuce remains the best adaptor for that budget range. I am about to shoot a feature and I still can't decide between using an adaptor or just shooting it throught the EX1 great piece of glass and using ND filters to get a respectable DOF. What do you think?

I think that as you are in France, the price of the Blade is probably going to be preferable to you - especially when you factor in delivery and customs taxes etc. Also, if anything goes wrong, getting the adpater back to the UK is going to be a whole lot quicker and less painful than the US.

As to whether you should shoot stock or with an adpater, there are a ton of threads you can read on this board - but in short, using an adapter definitley adds to the amount of time, equipment and personnel you might need on a shoot. And if you haven't shot with one before, you definitely want to go out and get familiar with the process first. That said, you can get some beautiful looking images with an adapter. The film in my sig was shot on an EX1 + Lettuce combo...

JEEBLADE

I would tend to agree with you on the Jeeblade but unfortunately there seems to be Chromatic Aberrations when it is used with the EX1 from what I read on this forum. Also, delivery would take until mid-March.

THE ECHO : LOOKS FANTASTIC

Great looking film but it would have been interesting to see what could have been achieved without the Lettuce. We never hear or see non-adapter "great" shots. I also notice Bloom is great with static shots. I yet have to see a dynamic tracking shot.

Now you said shooting with a Lettuce requires more people? Well how many people were necessary to shoot this? Were Philip and his tripod not enough to get these shots?

If you take the long shot of the priest and the man, it is hard to tell whether a regular EX1 lens would not have achieved similar result as the Lettuce with some adjustments.

I've also noticed the fact when one shoots with a Lettuce, one tends to overuse the Low Depth of field and stick with mostly 1 or 2 prime lenses. As a result the movie may look "Fantastic" but feel visually repetitive. I don't know. What do you think?

I think it has already been said on this forum, but it is probably too early to say whether there is CA with the EX1 or not. I believe Phil posted that he hadn't seen any on his latest footage. Let's see...

In simple terms, the long-shots and wides could easily have been achieved without the Letus. Practically, it was obviously easier to leave the adpater on for those shots. For the OTS 2 shots, I wanted the shallow depth of field and that could only have been achieved with the adapter.

A small point, but there are a couple of tracks in the film. But obviously we were limited to what was possible on the day. Which leads me on to-

Now you said shooting with a Lettuce requires more people? Well how many people were necessary to shoot this? Were Philip and his tripod not enough to get these shots?

Yes, Philip and his tripod were enough. But this was a one day short - you're talking about a feature. I think Phil has ENG background. He was pulling focus off the barrel of the lens. Not for the faint hearted and under normal circumstances, you would want to have at least a focus puller. If you want to dolly as well then it's a must.

I'm a Director - not really a gear-head. So I should add another factor. I don't want to have to ask actors to repeat stuff over and over while we go again for focus issues.

If you take the long shot of the priest and the man, it is hard to tell whether a regular EX1 lens would not have achieved similar result as the Lettuce with some adjustments.

As I mentioned above, this could easily have been done with the stock lens. It was just quicker to not break the camera down.

I've also noticed the fact when one shoots with a Lettuce, one tends to overuse the Low Depth of field and stick with mostly 1 or 2 prime lenses. As a result the movie may look "Fantastic" but feel visually repetitive. I don't know. What do you think?

Yes, I think that is probably true.

Ryan... if you're talking about the Bloom following. It is fantastic. The man is a rock star around here. Nothing gets purchased without going through the Bloom grinder. A company spends months on R&D and one word from Bloom and hundreds of people are out of a job. That's how the Letus became the Lettuce. That's how Adapters became Adatas. And that's how a lens became a great piece of glass, a prime lens a really great piece of glass, and a 35mm adaptor a great great piece of glass, and a 10,000 Euro fuji lens a Fantastic piece of glass.

I will tell you a story. One day a guy had the silly idea of putting a sock on his viewfinder with a lens in it. Obviously a nutcase until Bloom tested it and recommended it. You know what happened next? Everybody wanted one. The silly idea became a hit. I own one. It's called Hood Pro. No comment.

Now if you don't like Philip... put a sock in it.

Thank you. :)

No one has a sense of humor on these boards. I'm sure Mr. Bloom is laughing. Calm down everyone. He can defend himself.

Bloom is a smart guy, with expensive equiptment, with a great eye for shots, but he's not God, and I don't think he likes having so many fan boys willing to pounce on any dissent...I think he probably has a great sense of humor.
