Recruiting for OnLocation CS5 beta testing and customer visits

Hi All,

We will be kicking off pre-release testing for OnLocation CS5 pretty soon and are eager to increase the ranks of our beta testers. As users of this program, you have a vested interest in the feature set, workflow, and stability. There's no better way to have a hand in helping us improve OnLocation.

Actually, there is a better way: sign up for a customer visit, where two or three guys from our development team will come observe for a day on the set while you're using OL. We're especially interested if CS4's Take-Recording Mode* is central to your workflow. Also, proximity to Sacramento, CA is a plus just on account of budget--the core of our team is in Folsom.

Let me know which role you'd like to sign up for. Please include the name of your company/organization as well as your real name.

If beta testing or a customer visit isn't in the cards for you, we still want to know what you think about CS4 (features you really miss, changes that you like, etc.) and what enhancements & new features you'd like to see in CS5. Feel free to post such input in this thread or on Adobe's forums or in an email directly to me.

Thanks,
Mark Mapes

*if you have CS4 and don't know about the Take-Recording Mode, go check it out in the help system. For my money, it's the coolest new feature in OL CS4.

I record 90% of my material uncompressed via Black Magick Deck Link (components or HDSDI).
The Deck Link interface has only a record and play button.

The best improovement would be the ability to access the Black Magic card via OL.

Having all the wonderfull gizmos, scopes, monitor and professionel recording features at hand while recording uncompressed would sell me to OL CS5.

Frank

P.S. and yeah, Take Recording is pretty slick.

You know what would be nice, rather than all new releases...give users a break and throw a few incremental dot x improvements out there once in a while.

Everytime I turn around I have to pull out my wallet for the next version.

Tweak the current version a bit before you light the next flaming hoop for us to jump through.

Postmaster: We've had quite a few requests recently for capture card support. I'll add your vote to the tally.

Al: If you're talking about bug fixes, OnLocation has released two updates already, and most of the other programs in Production have released either one or two. We will consider additional patches if and when severe, reproducible bugs come to our attention. If, however, you're suggesting that we add features in dot releases, we're legally prohibited from doing so under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. [How keen we'd be to go down that path is another question. Answering it is both moot and above my pay grade.]

Hi All,

--the core of our team is in Folsom.

Prison? You know that explains why you guys put out releases so fast.
So do the coders get breaks or are they in solitary confinement?

Al, you could always upgrade every other time. I've skipped a few here and there.
Personally I find Adobe products pay for themselves rather quickly.

I think what he is saying is that investors wouldn't be happy if the company were basically giving away the technology in point upgrades rather than saving them to entice people to pay them.

Shareholders suck- the world would be a better place if they didn't exist.

A private company on the other hand, like NewTek can add features to Lightwave 3d in point upgrades , hell they could give the package away if they felt like it. Likewise they can't be taken over by someone like Autodesk in a hostile takeover. They could say (emphasis on could) "keep yer stinkin money" if they felt like it.

i would love to see playOUT features so you can load footage into the project and allow you to playout the footage over FW so it could a be reliable playout software for the field as well as field ingest

Thanks to all for the input. I've entered feature requests where appropriate and added "votes" for stuff that was already in the feature db. We've also gotten several volunteers for beta testing. More are welcome!

PhantomVideo: Am I correct that what you're basically looking for is support for a second monitor, so you can see whatever's playing in OnLocation on a display other than laptop's? If so, how essential is it that the connection be via FireWire? Would standard monitor connections such as DVI work as well?

No i mean a mobile playout server, so you can load an AVI back INTO the project and play it out the FW connection, for like OB's and Musical Plays, Churches, that require critital playback info, there is NO product out there in this price range that has RT timecode and VU's etc of what has already been aquired, so its a reversal of the role, it can aquire over FW but also playback over FW, so image a whole lot of post produced content reloaded into a reliable moblie playout suite, this could techinally be a moblie broadcast server, a few playlisting options and it would be awesome, another feautre would be if premiere could broadcast DVCPROHD and HDV back out the FW it could serve as a broadcast monitor for smaller edit suites scopes for the field and for post and i know prem has scopes but having them on a deadicated system would be ideal

but DVI/VGA would be helpful also for projector playout

last time I tryed onloc did not playback over FW, and cannot load clips into its shot list or DVR module as it was in cs3

I'd love to give feedback on OnLocation. Among other things, it would be nice to record simultaneous streams.

Tim Naylor has found a company that Adobe should emulate...
