Official Mattebox / Matte Box F.A.Q.

Hi Century Media,

I've seen you come from Vienna, so I propose the stuff from Geardear. It's a german company and you would'nt have to pay so much taxes / shipping costs.
The "medium" gear costs 225€ (280$). I don't know the weight of it but as I'm searching for a matte box too, I'm gonna find out all the facts like weight and material. Gonna post it here when I know more.

Redrock mattebox

Redrock mattebox

I'm considering getting Redrock Mattebox. However, as I'm new to matteboxes I have couple of questions:

1. Is there any point in using 4x5.65 filters? I will use the mattebox with 35mm adapter and small diameter SLR lenses. The widest lens I have at the moment is 20mm. I might get a 16mm in the future, though.

2. I find graduated ND filters very useful. I definitely want to use them with my mattebox. To what extent can I adjust the vertical position of the filter in this mattebox? I read the review of the Redrock mattebox by Tim on the forum and he said that 4x5.65 grads gave him much more flexibility. Why is that? Don't 4x4 filter offer the same range of vertical adjustment? Did he mean the vertical 4x5.65 ND grads ('portrait', as opposed to more common 'landscape' orientation)? Will such vertical grad allow for wider range of vertical positioning of the transition region?

Your help will be greatly appreciated. I've been googling for two days and couldn't find the answers.

Hi Trez

I am happy to answer your questions

1. you can use either 4x4 or 4x5.65" filters with the microMB. If you are shooting HD keep in mind even though you are using 35mm lenses it is still recording in a format that is wider than it is tall. as you make an investment in filters you will be able to go increasingly wider with 4x5.65" filters. It is also a bit of future-proofing your setup if you want to rent or move to Red or other cameras.

2. You can adjust both angle (rotation) and height of the grad filters to just about anything you need. The 4x5.65" filters will give you a little more room to move here, but again not required.

Hope that helps

I am quite curious what the wait is on the RedRock Matte Boxes is these days? I am tossed up between the Redrock and Hanson Matte Box. Both seem to be solid!

Officially it's under 2 weeks. Currently it's around one week lead time. We have worked hard to bring this down.

THanks

Indie Snap deliver the product?

Indie Snap deliver the product?

All of this in terms of quality is very good, but delivered the product? I have bought and paid with paypal a matte box for canon xha1 on 5 June 2008. I have not arrived. I sent numerous e-mail address to request a tracking number, but nothing, no response. Take advantage of this thread for me to respond by the company and understand the why of this incredible behavior. For fear that my mail was spam in the end, I sent this information with an email address, but nothing. So my question is: get the goods?
My mail is info@giovannilombardo.it - I invite you to answer me.

Decent Matteboxes run from $300-$1000+
Have any of you chaps tried making your own mattebox?
I have used 1 cent computer paper, and have had great results, when I compared computer paper to a rented mattebox, I couldn't tell the difference.
You could probably make a cheap mattebox out of plastic or a thin metal as well.

So how do you mount and separately rotate your 2 or 3 4x5.65 glass filters in your 1 cent paper matte box? You made a sunshade, not a matte box.

probably 90% of you guys on this forum do not have 4x5 glass filters. I use the screw on filters and probably most you guys do too. so for most of us matte box is primarily used for shade, so in that case try my paper matte box ;)

Circ Polarizer in matte box: please explain

Circ Polarizer in matte box: please explain

Can someone provide a brief explanation of how to use a circ polarizer in a matte box. I come from still photography, where the polarizer screws onto the front of the lens and spins. How does this work in a filter holder of a matte box? Do you rotate the filter holder?

A picture is worth a thousand words, if you have one!

Thanks

Hi bobonli

There are several mattebox tutorials. The easiest way to find them is through the Redrock customer support portal at http://start.redrockmicro.com - just click on the mattebox and see all the tutorials there

Hope that helps

Brian

Found them, thank you very much. They are very informative!

Two questions Brian (and/or anyone using the RR MMB with an EX-1):

1) Will the matte box fit a Sony EX1 without a 35 mm adapter? I know some MBs run into trouble with the built on mic. I plan to shoot outdoors so having the shading and ability to use ND and polarizers is important.

2) I'm not literate on the subject of rail systems. Must I use RR rails with the MMB or is it compatible, for example with Zacuto rails and baseplate?

Thanks
