Academy Awards: In Memoriam (and Oscar's Discussion Thread)

Congrats Zak. I'll be watching for that one as well. Wow.

Haven't seen Cool Hand Luke redone yet. Just watched that a few months ago. I'm due for another watch, hehe.

so Adam, one of the producers on this, just watched the Paul Newman section I cut. he said... "Dude, I got chills just now!"

Dude, this is cool and all but what I really want to see are 'White Knuckles' and 'Heart of Now'.

well, my emotionally wrenching Paul Newman ending (based around him tearfully playing banjo in Cool Hand Luke) has been rejected in favor of doing a split-screen montage with a line from Sweet Bird of Youth. and they want to end on a shot of, you guessed it, Newman tapping his nose from The Sting. hate to say it, but I now sympathize with every editor I formerly criticized for a lack of imagination in past In Memoriam reels. I'm sure they all went in, like I did, hoping to do something special, and found themselves reduced to being a very expensive button pusher.

That's so disappointing. :crybaby:

Yeah that sucks about the ending, but I do like the subtle theme of doorways - looking forward to seeing it none the less.

Maybe they just don't want it to be gut wrenching. It will be sad enough seeing all the clips of Paul Newman knowing that he is no longer with us.

Would have made for a very touching moment though so I'm a bit torn.

Just edit it your way and lay that on us after it airs.

Looking forward to seeing it.

Mike

well, when you see the selected clips... you'll notice a theme of people walking thru doorways, or being ushered out of frame, wherever possible. that's my stamp.

How fitting. It's amazing what the subtle nuances of a good editor can create. I am really excited about seeing this. Were you able to squeeze anything from The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean in there?

got some swag today. a hat and a hoodie.

reconforming to queen latifah's vocals now, recorded yesterday. found out we are the last presentation before announcing the last big awards of the night. despite having many of my own touches removed, the folks at the academy are thrilled with it -- not that a roomful of old queens who have been producing this show for decades are any real indicator of what's good -- they wanted bette midler to sing instead of queen latifah before she turned them down. and as much as they gave lip service to the idea of wanting something fresh and new, all of their notes steered us back to doing it exactly as its been done every other year.

i'm not saying it isn't going to move you. but I had originally brought something that was much more heartfelt and impactful.

So can you tell us, who's the first and last to be shown?

I wondering if I can swindle this into some $$$$$ at our Oscar Party.

Just saw this, congrats! Of course it sucks to have to be the monkey doing the edit-by-committee, but at least you can check it off your list of life experiences. I'll be looking forward to watching this at least as much as anything else in the Oscars this year, which I frankly couldn't care less about.
