so what is the acquisition framerate for shows like mythbusters or dirty jobs, what about food network stuff like diners dives & drive ins?

found a discovery channel spec sheet from 2006 that lists 1080i 59.94 as the mastering spec... but the shows don't look interlaced to me.

Mythbusters sometimes look like 24/25 fps and sometimes 60i. I'm going to guess that it's 23.98.

I don't know but I was going to say 30p or 60i. There is a lot of camera movement in that show and it dosen't look to stuttery like you get from 24p on fast pans.

what about 720/60p? with an upres to 1080/60i? guess there really isn't a way to find out for sure?

Well you could record the show off of tv and digitize it into an Avid and then go field by field and count the frames.

Nope, you'll always get 30 frames, NTSC standard. Discovery doesn't broadcast in 720 60p, they broadcast in 1080 60i.

You'll always count 30 frames but how do we know if it was shot in 24 or 60i?

Not true. 24p broadcast in 1080 60i will show up as a 3/2 cadence. Find a shot with a lot of movement, and digitize it into a 30i project on an edit system like an Avid that allows you to click FIELD by FIELD through a shot. If you count 2 fields, then 3 fields, then two fields..., then you know you are looking at material that was originally shot at 24p. If with every passing field, the frame changes, then you know you are looking at material that was originally shot at 30i.

Anyone have any better ideas? :) he he he

That's a lot of work. I guess it would be best if you used a fast pan or lots of motion for 1 second.

How would I tell the difference between 30p and 60i? I don't know how to display fields in my Avid, only frames.

On the Command Palette, under the Move menu, there are buttons labeled "Step forward one field" and "Step backward one field." If you are working without an NTSC monitor, these buttons are very useful for many things: Checking that the interlace settings were set properly on an imported quicktime movie, checking to make sure there is no jitter or stutter on a reverse motion effect clip, and checking to see if footage is 24p or 30p or 60i.

I don't feel like it's shot in 60i, it just not smooth enough to be interlaced like that. It could be shot 30p or even 25p as the production company is from down under.

No, 60P is REALLLLLY smooth. Plus, I believe it's shot on XDCAM HD, which the fastest frame rate is 50p for PAL. I am guessing that it's 30P.
