My friend asked me to shoot a scene for her acting reel which gave me a chance to put my new 85mm f1.2L to work. And it is AMAZING. I love the sharpness.

looks more like grain than noise, either way doesn't bother me, nice grabs man!

I cheap still photo lens can ressolve 1080 and get just as sharp results as a high quality lens. HDV (and most other video formats), video shutter speed and the amount of in camera sharpness are also going to make it hard to judge sharpness from a grab.

The fact that its an 85mm lens with a 1.5x crop factor requires you to shoot at about 1/125th shutter speed for a still photo without moving subjects among the other variables I mentioned

Not quite true. My 50mm f1.4 is among the sharpest lens I have, and side by side comparison with my 50mm f1.8 (where both are focused properly and stopped down to f4) clearly shows that the f1.4 is far sharper.

The test I've done were between my stock lens and my L series lens @ 3MP. I couldn't tell the difference at f8. Not ruling out your results though, tests are hard to control sometimes.

I thought the same as you at first until I got my 50mm f1.4 and start noticing that all the shots I do with it seems to stand apart in term of sharpness. My 85mm f1.8 is definitely not as sharp as the 1.2L. There's definitely a benefit to getting more expensive glass.

I have that lens. Its my HERO lens. Anytime i need "Awesomeness" in a can. 85mm F1.2 L accept no substitutes.

I still, to this day, say the XH-A1 destroys the HPX/HVX in resolving power. These 1080 "grabs" look really nice, even with the "grain".

Just to let folks who are shopping for lenses know there is precisely one substitute: the older version in the breechlock mount, back when they called it the "85/1.2 SSC Aspherical" It doesn't have the fancy red stripe of the L series lens, but it's the optical equal in every way... and it has the advantage of the breechlock mount, that you can click the auto aperture lever into manual mode and don't need to find something to wedge it with. Plus, the used price usually has 3 digits, instead of the guaranteed 4 digits of the L series version.

Spectacular lens, though, in either version.

Sorry Huy Vu

I cant see what your excitement is over the screen grabs you posted.

I can not find anything especially "sharp" (plane of focus) in the shots and the grain seems excessive.

I am going to re test my own Nikkor lens set with something subjective, as you have done ,so I can do my own comparison with your results.

What size have you posted your grabs at and what size were they originally?
