been considering u873r as a boom mic, just wanted to see if there are any samples around from a decent range or if anyone has any thoughts on the mic as an alternative to the octavia, ive heard it performs a little better than the nt3 as well

Well it's BIG 9", that's small shotgun sized. And it's heavy, 14+ oz, your boom op wont be sending you a Christmas card.
Edit: OK so I'm slapping my self for using specs from someplace other than AT... It is biger than the Oktava (6+" as opposed to 4.25") and it is heavier (5.6oz as opposed to 2.6oz) but it isn't a 9" 1lb monster. I think they were quoting the shipping weight and box size.

It's a hand held so I'm betting it's not close to flat.

So no I wouldn't boom it as an alt to the Oktava.

And who ever said it was like a NT3 you might not want to listen to anymore. The NT3 is a shotgun mic, a totally different beast. A little like saying a Mac truck performs a little better than a Ferrari. It does, when your not using it for what it was designed for.

edit: The above is incorrect but I thought I would leave it there so the following posts don't seem out of left field. The NT3 is not a shotgun, the NTG3 is the shotgun. Apologies for the misinformation.
