Have it, use it, like it. Never heard of the "film edition".

Don't know about Oktavacanada.com But I would recommend http://sound-room.com/ and if you tell them your on DVX User you get something like 5% off. Great service and they test the mics before they send them out and they don't deal in the Chinese Oktava knock offs.

way ahead of you....lol.....im in canada so have any idea of the duties id pay?........also should i be concerned about the oktava handling noise or can i go with their stock shock mount and cheap foam wind screen

I would take the AKG blueline with a ck-93 capsule into consideration. Great mic, less handling problems and not too much more expansive.

I second mbwkrause's nod on the AKG CK93. I opted for it over the Oktava hyper specifically because of the handling noise issues. Others on this board have indicated that you shouldn't bother trying to use the Oktava without a Rycote BBG but when you add the cost of the BBG to the Oktava, you end up within a few dollars of the CK93... which is fine indoors with the included wind screen.

Moreover, rumor has it that the CK93 was used for most of the dialog on Pearl Harbor. Rationale being... if it's good enough for audio on a Hollywood feature... it's good enough for hacks like us.

Well that only goes so far. A lot of the water/ waves used in THE BLACK STALLION were recorded on a portable Sony Cassette deck with the stereo Sony mic that came with it.

and yer in canada....ok, may i ask u what u use for wind screen and shockmount indoors, have any clips i could view....thanks

One of the best shockmounts around is also surprisingly affordable - the Rycote InVision mount that runs about $75.

For indoors the stock foam windshield that comes with the mic is really all that's needed. Outdoors more protection is in order. There are a vast number of alternatives but one good one is the Rycote "S" series mount and furry. Rode's Dead Cat and Blimp are also getting a lot of attention these days.

ok so just to clarify that lil foam cover that costs 7 bucks on the soundroom site is good enough indoors

oh steve btw, i noticed on oktava canada they have the "film edition" hyper vs the "bella nero" on the sound room, wondering if one is suggested over the other.......the sound room said the difference is the film edition has a low cut filter instead of the -10db pad........what do you think?.......ive researched the octavacanada site and found good feed back, but just wondering if ill wish i had gone for the bella nero

I don't own any of the Oktava models so I can't speak from first hand experience but I would consider the low cut filter to be of more value than the pad on a boom mic. Low frequency rumble and handling noise is more of an issue than high sound pressure levels most of the time. And I think you can buy the pad as an accessory anyway.

oh ok thanks man........its just the guy at sound room said:

"we have thought about including the low-cut filter but have not for two reasons. 1) it would bump up the price of the microphone by almost $100, and 2) the low-cut filter was noisy, and we will not sell it. I think Oktava has since made some revisions to to the low-cut filter and we will look again to see if it is worth offering it to our customers."

maybe just tryin to get me to buy from them....lol

The general wisdom you see on this board is "only buy an oktava from sound room". There is a long history of fake / poor quality oktavas out there.

Sound room also gives a discount to DVXuser members, I think the code is DVX or DVXUSER.

Edit: Just looked at the Oktava Canada website. Yikes.

ok, lol, why yikes on oktava canada......the guy from soundroom had good things to say about them....no?

I have an Octava mc 012-01 that I haven't used in a long time. Not that it's a bad mic, quite the opposite. I've upgraded to a schoeps is all. Anyway, if you want it I'll let it go for $190 Cnd.
Oh yeah, I'm in Halifax.
Cheers
Jon
