Advantage of HD for SD Output?

I am planning to upgrade from DVX100B to an HVX. However, I am still working on a lot of SD productions, so I was wondering whether I will have any advantage shooting HD content and then outputting in SD.

I am hoping that I can import HD footage in an SD environment and then have the advantage of zooming and panning without loosing quality.

Is that a possibility specially in Premiere?

Sure of course. You can easily do an HD edit in Premiere then create a new timeline in SD and drop it in. You'll then be able to pan and zoom each shot as desired to a certain extent before losing apparent visual quality. Plus you'll always have an HD master version of your project for down the road when SD production disappears entirely.

you can also just set up and import to an HD timeline, then export to Encore for authoring, and set Encore up to produce the SD DVD. that gives you the ability to later export the same timeline to Blu-Ray.

Alls good as long as you are working in progressive footage. Once the footage is interlaced it can start causing problems...as I have discovered...

The fact is that CS4 Encore does not see a CS4 Premiere DVCPROHD sequence properly through Dynamic Link. I have been trying to get Encore to downscale my 720P material from Premiere via Dynamic Link for 3 days solid. It just does not work. Jeff Bellune - a moderator over at the CreativeCow Encore forum - says "I don't know why En doesn't see the Pr DVCPROHD sequence properly through Dynamic Link - it sees other HD sequences properly and downscales appropriately." If anyone has found the magic bullet I sure would love to know how you do it before I register this as major glitch with Adobe.

If just exporting from Premiere and importing the MPG2 movie as a Timeline without the Dynamic Link is there any compression hit

I do not know if it will work, but try this --

In the Contents folder where you have your MXF files, disable Read-Only. Make sure it applies to all subfolders and files.

Like I said, don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a shot.
