Academy Award Nominaaa....yawn...

I've never been more disinterested in the outcome of these awards. None of the Best Picture nominees are films I will watch again come several years time. The only film released last year that I think will become a classic worthy of my repeat viewing time is The Dark Knight, and it got the shaft. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it was the most satisfying piece of entertainment I'd seen. And The Wrestler didn't get a best picture nom either!

Richard Jenkins got a nod??

I liked the Visitor, but as a category nom he was pure filler even for the Spirit awards. If he decided to skip the Oscars I'm not sure the presenters would even notice. The Visitor was a good role and well acted, don't get me wrong, but it's not groundbreaking like Rourke, Penn, or (from what I've heard) Langella.

The Batman snubs are irksome, but not surprising. The Revolutionary Road snubs are surprising, at least to me.

Wow!!! I can't believe Robert got nominated... I never thought the Academy would nominate a spoof movie like Tropic Thunder, good movie and nomination well deserved. But we all know who's gonna win that award for best supporting actor.

It should have been Brendan Gleeson.

Benjamin Button is good, but it ain't 13 nominations good. That just goes to show how weak the year was.

I am pulling for Frost/Nixon

I pretty much agree with Battuta. I don't feel passionate enough about any of those nominees to care much this year. Was it sort of a mediocre year in film?

I was relieved Dark Knight wasn't nominated for best picture at least. I enjoyed it. Watched it twice. But it's still just another superhero movie to me.

Interesting that the Editing noms all just mirror the Best Picture nominations. It's like no one in the Academy really gets what editors do, so the Best Editing has to be in the Best Pictures right? :-)

i believe, and could be wrong, that only editors nominate editors and then the entire academy votes on a winner from those five.

Ah. That might be true. I just sometimes think the "Best Editing" in reality is probably on a movie that was just sorta okay, because if not for the editor "saving it in post" it would have been awful. Heheh.

Guess I have to see The Reader. Looked so uninteresting... Anyone seen it?

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Josh Brolin, “Milk”
Robert Downey Jr, “Tropic Thunder”
Phillip Seymour Hoffman, “Doubt”
Heath Ledger, “The Dark Knight”
Michael Shannon, “Revolutionary Road”

I would imagine this is down to Hoffman and Ledger. Hoffman was better (as can usually be said). But there will probably be a lot of momentum behind Ledger.

I think that these people who makes the nominations need to see alot more films. I wonder how many films they actually see? Every year it seems they pick from this little pool of movies? I am not surprised.

On a side note, I don't quite understand how Slumdog Millionaire qualifies for best picture and not best foreign? I also don't understand how it gets nominated anyway. It was fun, I guess, but best picture? Slumdog Milliionaire is like City of God if it was made by network executives.

I can't believe that Bruce Springsteen wasn't nominated for Best Song. But two of the songs from Slumdog Millionaire were nominated?

I have to disagree on this one, Shannon's role in RR was quite possibly the best supporting performance I've ever seen. I know that's a leap but man, it completely knocked my socks off and proved how far an actor who is truly consumed by his character can take a role. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

It's hilarious that Robert Downey Jr. got a nod for playing a character who was an Oscar darling. Of course TT wasn't a serious film, but Downey was amazing in his role.

It's always good to see a comedic performance go up for an Oscar. I'm going to have to agree with the thread title. The yawn part, that is. 2008 was pretty boring. Especially compared to 2007, which was the exact opposite. I couldn't be any less interested in The Reader and Forst/Nixon. Benjamin Button was okay. Milk, Slumdog, and The Wrestler are the only other seemingly interesting movies of '08, next to Dark Knight, and The Wrestler and Dark Knight got snubbed quite a bit, although Dark Knight did get a good amount of nominations.
