Academy Awards: In Memoriam (and Oscar's Discussion Thread)

Wow, that's huge Zak. Congratulations! How did it come about? (If you are able to say...)

Will you be selecting the clips all by yourself or do they give you parameters to work from?

thanks everyone. a friend of mine is a producer and he got the gig. then called me up and asked me if i wanted to cut it. january will be a very busy time for me, but it should only take about a week. and as far as selecting clips goes, there are some parameters in place that need to be adhered to. aspects of the presentation have already been determined. but within that framework, myself and the producer will be selecting clips. the academy, like any client, has final approval of course.

I love forward to the In Memoriam every year.

When I host Oscar parties, I make everyone shut the **** up during it.

Congrats, pally:beer:

Congrats, man! Awesome. Can you add my career to the montage?

AHa! Funny...

/me ducks back into the shadows after receiving no response.

Actually, on a side note, I wonder how many people will refuse to believe me when I say "I know the guy who made that. Shook his hand once..." :)

UPDATE:

I've been working for a week now. I was unprepared for the emotional rollercoaster this would be. Imagine how you feel watching the In Memoriam during the Oscars broadcast and spread that out over 10 hours a day for 5 days.

Got the final, official list yesterday. Some outright snubs. Some unlikely inclusions.

the gig is going to last longer than i thought.

Dude I'm so excited to see this now lol. Not that I wouldn't be otherwise but being able to go "hey I know the guy who..." is always a plus! Congrats! :D

Congrats on getting through this Zak, really looking forward to it no doubt it will be spectacular and a great tribute to those who have passed. 50+ hours of editing dead people sounds like quite the daunting and emotionally trying task.

That part of the Oscar ceremony always brings me to the verge of crying. This year the tears might actually flow because I'll be proud to know the guy who made the video.

I think at some point afterward I may post my "version 1" of the cut, because routinely these things get watered down when you have a dozen people who need to sign off on it. but so far everyone is very excited, and falling over themselves with praise for what they've seen so far. although my brief flourishes of rearview shots, silhouettes and other non-traditional (aka "not a close-up") but equally compelling and cinematic shots were called into question by one guy already.

i'll share many more details after I get paid.

To me one of the most important elements of that gig would be the songs used. Something emotionally engaging and has a wonderful build up and sweeping ending. Odds are it will speed up in the end and end on one last iconic shot, probably Ledger. But that's my guess ;)

I'm excited.

Ledger was a last minute addition last year. Won't be included this year.

I hope they go for my pitch on how to end it. It will be devastatingly heartbreaking if they do.
