i'm about to dump my film to tape for the dvd authoring guys, is it cool to just hook up the camera via firewire and start recording with my camera and then hitting play on the timeline? are there any export settings that i should know about?

also, should i be overly concerned with the tape being used to dump the film to? I usually go with the mq's but only have fujis right now, does that even make a difference?

thanks, paunch

I think you can technically play from timeline and back up to tape but I wouldn't for two reasons:

1. You might forget that your draft quality is selected and be backing up a bad quality version of you final video

2. Backing up from premiere in general isn't that great for system performance and can at times cause audio pops and breaks if you aren't listening closley enough

My solution has always been to use scynalizer to back my final exported DV avi to tape (props to DVXuser for that one.) It is a very small and not demanding program and always plays the video back smoothly.

In regards to tape. Its best practice not to switch between tape brands because the lubrication is different which could cause clogged recording heads and ultimatly drops in the tape. I have always used tdk mini-dv tapes on my XL2, they are the cheapest around and while they aren't master grade, sticking to those tapes and never putting in a different brand has resulted in only 3 or 4 dropped frame instances in about 100 tapes. Just remember that its not like copying a file where you know its their, make sure that after you back up your video you watch it for dropped frames and audio messups.

ok, i have scenelyzer, do you just export then from premiere as a dv avi file and then import into scenelyzer?
