Burn quandry in DVDa 4.0

When burning a DVD, I get to the end of the burn session and get a message "The command completed without errors" rather than the usual "burn has completed successfully, would you like to burn another?". There is definitely data on the disc however It is hit or miss when playing in various dvd players.

Some projects give me the ..."would you like to burn another?" message at completion and with those, no problem.

Project length is about 5 min. I encode to the DVDa standard in Vegas 7.0 at:

29.97 fps, NTSC, 720x480
mpeg2 Video rendering quality: best
Variable bit rate, two pass
Maximum: (bps) 8,000,000
Average (bps) 6,000,000
Minimum (bps) 4,200,000

Everything else in the custom template, video tab is set to default.

Audio is encoded to Dolby digital AC-3 using same file name.

Once in DVDa, I prepare to a specific folder first, then I go back to the Make DVD button and click "burn" and "burn a previously prepared project".

I've encoded literally dozens of projects using Vegas to DVDa the same way and only recently have I ran into this problem.

Am I missing something on the DVD Architect end of things? Ie: under project properties, preferences, or maybe under the "make DVD"?

The porject properties in DVDa are set to the same as the Vegas propject: NTSC 29.97, 720x480.

Has anyone else ran into this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you switch DVD burners, or between DVD-R and DVD+R? I got that error when using a certain Pioneer burner when burning to DVD+R. Certain burners don't seem to like certain media.

Thanks for you prompt reply, David.

I have two burners in my system. One is about two years old (Sony DVD RW DW-Q120A). I burn virtually all my work on that unit.

I also have recently installed another drive (Sony RW DRU-180A)...In an attempt to burn to two DVDs at once...but that's another story.

I have gotten the same problem no matter which drive I direct DVDa to burn to.

I use exlcusively Taiyo Yuden DVD-R

I did a firmware update for both burners and then ran drive check.

All checked out fine.

Any suggestions?

Not sure. Has this happened over multiple projects? Or is it just this one? Is it something you can easily redo from scratch?

Perhaps you should uninstall and reinstall DVDA. Fortunately, it's a relatively quick process.

This problem used to never happen through dozens of projects. Then hit and miss. Now it seems to happen every time I burn a project in DVDa.

Sometimes I can get the DVD to play after several tries. It almost seems like the data is not burned in the surface of the disc adequately.

This most recent project, I got the "The command completed without errors" message upon completion of burn instead of "burn has completed successfully, would you like to burn another?" That disc worked in one of my 3 DVD players. I did two more ending the same way, except...they worked in all my players. hmm

As far as doing from scratch, no prob.

And the uninstall, install was my next task.

thanks...Jeffro

Well...

I did an uninstall/install and still have the same problem.

If anyone has any suggestions or has the same issue, please let me know.

Thanks in advance

I just started having a similar issue.

Using Vegas 8.0c and DVDA 4.5, I have been burning DVD's from the same project. I will test them on my DVD player at home and they have burned OK until... I started getting errors on my DVD player and the latest DVD won't play. Studio DVD's play fine. The earlier DVD's burned play fine as well.

I can play the same DVD on two different computers. Nothing else has changed as far as I know.

I thought it was the media that I was burning to (DVD-R), so I took it back and got a different brand, but same issue.

Any ideas?

I was having that problem for a while. I assumed it was my burner so I bought a new one and the issue went away. Also, some DVD players don't like burned discs. I had a player that used to play them, then it was hit or miss, then it wouldn't play burned discs period. I bough a cheap one from walmart, and it worked for a year, then stoped playing burned discs. Store bought ones continued to work fine. I would say get a new player if the discs will still play in the computer then that's probably the issue.

El Director, thanks for the input. I'm not ready to buy a new DVD player just yet. :)

I've done some additional trouble shooting and here's what I found:

First of all, I forgot to mention that I'm burning to 'Printable DVD-R'. I don't know if that should matter, but FYI.

I tried burning the same project to a different brand of DVD-R (not printable) and the DVD played fine. Then, I burned on to the Printable DVD-R and still had sporadic blocky green artifacts and picture freezing.

I noticed a check box called 'Smart Prepare' and unchecked it, thinking that maybe DVDA was remembering the media specifications from the first and different DVD.

At the same time, I changed the burn 'Speed' to 8.0X (I was using 16.0X).

The DVD's burned and played fine!

So, I still don't understand what happened, but I'm burning DVD's again.

If anyone has any thoughts on this, let me know. Thanks!

"Smart Prepare" means that if you make changes to the project (menus, whatever), it doesn't re-render the whole project, but only what you changed.

I would suspect the write speed had more to do with it than anything.

Thanks David. That did seem to have an affect. I'm researching now to find out why?

I'm currently burning DVD's that work.
