Anything up from Canon at NAB?

After deciding that the HVX still fits my needs for paying the bills, I went quiet for a while, not following the progress on the market.
Stuff I´ve seen from the HMC150, looks good enough for me, that I´d rather downsize with my next camera purchase, considering add on costs for P2.

Scarlet just isn´t here yet, Sony I don´t know anything about atm, JVC never got my attention...

One brand i still have high hopes on is Canon. (I´m no fan-boy of either brand...)

The 5D sensor in an XL body with AVCintra on SD cards, please :dankk2:

So, any rumors to feed me?

I am waiting for any press release from Canon too, maybe in February?

I want to see their answer to the HMC150, the A2 AVCHD?

These days I'm a lot more excited about seeing a 24p DSLR with manual controls from Canon than I am in their HDV camera offerings. In that dept they've always seemed a year or two behind Sony and Panasonic in the innovation dept.

Yeah, but maybe the lack of "features we all want to see" in the 5D, is not to eat shares of their video market, the 5D would just be too good for the price tag...
And even if they´ve put out another HDV version of their small "HV" cams, I doubt they will for their next prosumer line.

And yeah, canon always is a little late, so after sony´s fx1000 and pana´s HMC150 there could be sth in the oven from them at NAB

I suspect it's more they were surprised by the strong response to the 5D Mark II's video mode and are having massive internal discussions now as to what makes the most sense for the next model.

If they take the cue from their consumer division, all new Canons will probably be AVCHD to SD cards. This will probably the end for HDV-based consumer Canons with the HV-40 and all of their Vixia SDHC camcorders are looking good and packed with lots of professional features.

It would make sense that their pro-line will follow suit.

I still hope for a "beefed up" AVCHD codec for the Canon prosumer line, since they don´t have a professional line to protect, I just can´t see a reason not to go with e.g. an AVCintra codec.
Seriously, with tape HDV was the obvious choice for Canon, they didn´t have the market share for creating their own tape format and Sony and JVC where also using this format, so why bother.
But with tapeless workflow, it all boils down to bits and bytes, on some form of solid state recording, hopefully one that´s readily available...
You´ll still have to watch read/write speeds from SD cards, but a 50Mbit/s codec should be doable...

I don´t know about licencing issues though, this could be a reason for going with sth standard...

As far as Canon at NAB, don't expect anything. Canon has never, as far as I know, introduced a DV/HDV/prosumer camera at NAB. They always introduce them on their own, usually in/around July and November.

Well, AVCHDintra seems to offer 50 and 100Mbit/s datarates...
I´d like both options in one cam, AVCintra for best quality, regular AVCHD for longform recording...
It would be nice to see a AVCIntra camera around $5k

Well I wont wait for Canon's NAB announcement then...

As far as I remember their announcements over the past few years, pretty much since the XL-H1, what Barry says sounds right. The XL-H1 was announced at the end of the 2005, maybe Nov. and the XH-A1 in July. Same thing basically with the "s" upgrades of each camera.

I too wish that Canon would do something with AVC-HD and their pro line. I was at a FCP event this past summer, right around the time they announced the XL-H1s and XL-H1a upgrades. The Canon rep at the event said that they don't really have plans to or think that AVC-HD is good enough for the pro stuff. Maybe the HMC150 will urge them to change that stance? I doubt we'll see any major upgrades to either the XL or XH lines though, since both were just upgraded within the last six months.

Others as well as myself have been saying that an XL-H2 or an XH-A2 with AVC-HD and a sensor like the 5D mkII + EOS mount is a no brainer. I don't see it happening real soon though. Canon is most likely going to stick with tape for a while longer.

Why should they? HDV was the HD consumer follow up to DV.
Now AVCHD is already used a lot, no way they will put up another tape based camera against the EX1 or the the HPX170.
Remember this camera would have to hold up for at least another year after its release and by then it probably would be the last pro(sumer) cam still using tape.

But if Canon doesn´t pull off sth big with a XL revision, tape could also be the only USP for that cam ...

I agree that they should move on pretty soon to AVC-HD. The only reason I think they will wait a bit is that they've only recently upgraded their XL and XH lines with HDV-based cameras. Plus what I've been told by a Canon rep at an event that they'll be sticking with tape for a while longer.

Hopefully they'll go with AVC-HD after these are ready to be upgraded. November 2009 will be the three year anniversary of the XH-A1's debut. Personally I feel that the XH-A1s was a waste since it seems like such a minor upgrade. This spring or summer would've been the perfect time to announce an XH-A2 with AVC-HD. They should also add AVC-HD to their inevitable DSLR upgrades with movie modes as well.

All of Canon's best consumer cameras are AVCHD, wonder why they would be opposed to just putting that into the pro-line?

The HMC-150 is definitely pro level and it uses AVCHD, Canon needs to get with the program.

Same here. I don't understand their logic in holding back on AVC-HD pro cameras either. Maybe they think they can milk HDV for a few more years, and didn't anticipate the HMC-150. Now that it exists, I wonder if they will reconsider.

Plus, JVC has their new SDHC and SxS hybrid cameras that use 35mbps MPEG 2. If JVC can do basically what to amounts to an XDCAM HD format with SD cards, you would think Sony would want something sub $4,000 that records to SD cards to compete with JVC and Panasonic tapeless cameras.

Well Canon did announce the XL H1S and XL H1A at NAB 2008 (well like 3 days before actually), so there could be a possible announcement at NAB 2009.

I guess we'll just have to see :)

I must be the only person that doesn't have an issue with HDV.
Of course I'm no pro I'm just a guy that likes shooting video.........

Well, tapebased affordable HD workflow (HDV) was appealing to A LOT, AVCHD on cheap SD cards, sounds just as the right follow up for the solid state area...

Still keeping my fingers crossed (just don´t make it cmos, Canon...)
