How much does the video card in the system contribute to editing performance?

Does the video card installed in the system make a lot of difference when it comes to video editing as far as performance is concerned? Of course I realize that there would likely be a difference between a cheapo low-end card from 5 years ago and something more current. But if I have let's say a Nvidia GT7600 or similar, would upgrading to say a current GTX280 or GTX260 make any difference at all? Would this investment have any chance of paying for itself, lets say by reducing encoding times or such?

Vegas does not currently use any of the GPU acceleration functions of any video card, therefore, a faster/better video card will gain you nothing.

Vegas doesn't utilize the video card, so don't bother upgrading just for Vegas. The processor is the most important thing, as far as Vegas is concerned.

EDIT: You beat me, John.

What about other video software like premiere or avid? Do they take advantage of it, or is this just not something that is currently done?
