"I'd give my nuts for a car like that"...script ideas

Here's some background info:

I'm a volunteer in a local car club where we raise money for a charity through the sale of raffle tickets for a car that we give away every year.

We typically give about $50,000 to $100,000 each year.

This is the car that we will give away for 2009:

To increase raffle ticket sales, I've been brainstorming over a series of online Viral videos intended to generate web traffic and ticket sales.

Here's one video idea....

A guy in mid 20's is sitting at his desk at work near the end of the day with nothing to do. He opens a can of mixed nuts and aimlessly surfs the web for entertainment. He is absolutley bored out of his mind. The 5:00 bell is never going to ring. He watches dozens of stupid and silly videos of ridiculous acts caught on tape while snacking on his favorite mid afternoon treat in a can. As he mindlessly clicks his mouse buttons he stumbles upon the car seen above. Like a heavenly beam of light, the computer monitor brightens his face and perks his interest. The sound of the high-po racing engine can be heard through the PC speakers as the sports car quickly approaches in the cyber world. He moves closer and closer to the monitor as the sound gets louder and louder....... with his nose just inches from the screen, an explosive blast of speed, sound, and rushing wind, sends everthing on his desk flying into the air. When the dust settles, the frazzled web surfer dude thinks out loud...

"Whoaah!, dude, I'd give my nuts for a car like that..."....."Then I could have any babe I want..."

Out of nowhere, I perky and flirty female voice talks to his subconcious:

"hey dude, you don't don't need to give your nuts for a car like this, all you have to do is go to www(dot)website(dot)com and buy a raffle ticket. Then you could win the car. ....and besides, no babe would be interested in you without your nuts. (giggle giggle.)"

The goal of the project is to get people to watch the video because it is entertaining.....By watching it, they become exposed to our cause...which is to sell tickets and raise money.

That's the basic idea...any thoughts on a more developed concept. Thoughts on scenes, shots, dialoge, sounds, effects...etc..?

I'm thinking that the video will be 30sec to 1 minute in length.

Whattaya think?

Sincerely, Rob

yup, I like the idea. They should be silly and outrageous as possible, don't be afraid to make fun of cool cars.

I presume the actual car will be available for filming?

Here's a suggestion: small child at side of road, playing with a toy version to the car, making brmm brmm noises. The actual car pulls up beside child, driver leans out, smiles and ... makes louder brmm brmm noises (with mouth, not the car engine). Kid is very impressed, yells "Wanna race?", finish with shot of kid and car racing neck and neck along road, sped up to look like they're speeding, more brmm brm sound effects.

And another: guy drives into shot, in a big poser car (not your prize car), he revs engine, does his "I'm so cool and sexy' act to an unseen observer, cut to tight shot of observer who is beautiful woman, she's totally unimpressed, sneers"call that a car?', zoom out to show she's in your prize car, she roars off, leaving guy dejected, maybe says to camera "wow, wish I had a car like that", adorable child appears at his car window and offers to sell him a raffle ticket.

Here's one....

Somewhat geeky, nerdy looking guy is walking through a parking lot. Gets picked on and pushed around by one or more punk kids, who laugh derisively at him as he walks away. Some hot girls stand nearby, tsk-tsking.

Geeky guy gets into his car -- the hot car pictured above. REVS the engine loudly. The punk kids turn and look. So do the hot girls. The geeky guy peels out of the parking space and chases the punk kids around and around the lot, until the punks are covered in dust and debris from the spinning tires, coughing and choking.

The geeky guy squeals to a stop in front of the hot girls, who smile at him.

Cut to the geeky guy -- with the hot girls now in his car -- tearing away, leaving the punks in his dust.

Cut to -- the geeky guy sitting at his computer, looking at the raffle website. The whole thing was him daydreaming what his life might be like if he won that car. Excited, he clicks to buy a raffle ticket.

Voiceover something like, "Take a chance. Your life may never be the same."

The End

BTW, maybe it would be good to make some passing mention of the charity being supported by the proceeds. What charity is it?

I LOVE THESE IDEAS!!!

Thank you so much for posting them! They are simple enough that I think I can actually pull them off.

Here's a little more background. Our Charity is The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We have an annual car show called "The London Cobra Show" which takes place in London, Ohio in mid June. However, we work through out the year on the raffle car. Once we get it...either through donations or special pricing, we take it to various car shows and event where it is displayed and tickets are sold. These are all "point of purchase" tickets. We sell a few tickets through the web site (www.londoncobrashow.com) ..but not many. We really haven't put much effort into an internet based marketing campaign. Hence the idea of quirky video clips. We have typically sold about 2000-3000 tickets a year. It would be nice to use the power of the web to increase that number by ten fold or more...

Here's a "trailer" from DVD of the 2008 London Cobra Show...produced by your's truly.

Please keep the ideas coming!!!

We are all volunteers who do this for the fun of it..and because it warms our hearts. If you are interested in collaborating on a video project..or just doing one for the fun of it...let me know...and be assured that it is a good cause and will be greatly appreciated.

Sincere Thanks again!!

I like the idea, but I'd consider something other than a reference to losing one's 'Nuts". Some people will be put off by language that graphic.

Instead of making all the viral videos yourself, why not start a film making competiotion for other people to make the videos? Ok, you'd need some sort of prize (more than just raffle tickets :) ), and obviously contestants won't have access to the actual vehicle (but you could and should provide a pile of photos from all angles, for use in the entries).

Clang, a contest is a brilliant idea!! When I read your post, I immediately talked to the officers of our Club and they like the idea as well. It brings up the questions:

What is an attractive Prize?
How is the winner selected?
How do we run the contest?

Our ultimate goal is to sell raffle tickets.....so, what ever it takes to sell tickets...is what we are interested in.

Anymore thoughts as to how to set up a truly legit and productive contest?

I like the idea, but I'd consider something other than a reference to losing one's 'Nuts". Some people will be put off by language that graphic.

That was my first impression. Car culture has alot of conservatives involved in it and they tend to frown on those types of references. Just substitute nuts for something else. Left arm, life, etc and you're good.

I've been involved as an entrant in a couple of online film competitions, and suggest something like this:

Entrants must, by a certain date, create a video which:
  • is no longer than x seconds (I'd suggest 120 or even 60, longer doesn't tend to be better)
  • includes certain compulsory elements (presumably the raffle web site, some mention of the charity and prize etc)
  • conforms to certain sex/violence/language or other restrictions (up to you and your club, the charity may also have some preferences)
  • is either in English or subtitled in English (I'm not being bigoted, just suggesting that a video in unsubtitled Bulgarian will probably not meet your viral advertising needs)
  • doesn't include any copyrighted images, sound or music
  • and most importantly, promotes your raffle!
You as organizer provide a pile of car photos (and car engine noises?) for entrants to freely download and use. You clearly state that the winner will be the best viral video promoting the raffle, in the opinion of the judges (representatives from the club, charity and any film big names or other celebrities you can rope in).

Entrants must upload their finished videos to YouTube (you may also want to allow other video sharing sites), including certain keyword tags, then notify you (via your web page, or at worst via e-mail) with their contact details and YouTube link.

On your site, you need a 'View Entries' page, containing the links to all the accepted valid entries, to generate lots of viewing. Some sort of viewer voting would be a good idea, to help them go viral, but clarify that being 'Most Popular' video has little bearing on the official judging - expect lots of morons voting for themselves hundreds of times, very little you can do to avoid that.

After the closing date, some unlucky people (I'd suggest club members) need to watch all the entries to find some (maybe 20?) finalists. There may be hundreds to watch, but most will require only a few seconds to see that they are Terrible and unworthy of winning :) Whittling down the good ones to a final 20 or whatever may be harder.

For more viral encouragement, now update your web page with a 'View Finalists' page, again with viewer voting.

Now all your judges sit together and watch all the finalists on a big TV. (Although I guess they could independently watch them via the web site, but that will make it harder to discuss which ones you all like/hate.) By some process you decide a winner and maybe a runner-up. Announce the winner (and runner-up if any) on the website, get as much press publicity as you can (to sell more tickets), get some sleep before the actual raffle draw. :)

Obviously all this does require some web skills, but I don't think it's too scary, and once set up it could be re-used each year.

Hmm, no suggestions re prizes, although obviously a raffle ticket would be good as one of the winner's prizes... Money's always good, if unoriginal, but obviously you won't want to dig into the charity proceeds too much.

Hmm, and of course you should check out the DVXUser competitions: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=41 - bound to be some good ideas there
