16mm film transfer to HD for FCP

I'm seriously considering buying an old Bolex to start getting experience in film. I tried not to cry when I saw the price for even the cheapest color negative film + processing, but I was wondering what the average price is to have it transfered to HD editable on FCP. Does anyone know?

Also...

vs.

16mm shot, edited in FCP, 35mm film out

Does one look better than the other? or Both about the same?

Without a doubt, a 16mm blowup to 35mm would look better than HVX to 35mm.

It's been a while since I supervised a telecine session, but there are many places in L.A. that can do it. Fotokem, Laser Pacific, and Modern Video come to mind. You should check out LA411.com, it will give you many choices.

DVFilm has done both of those workflows/transfers before. Although the HVX will come close to the organic feel of 16mm film, you still can't beat film.

Although in our process, video benefits a lot from being transferred to 35mm, it's still not the same as what 16mm film will carry over to 35mm. You have to really look at budget and how much you will be shooting. If you are planning for a feature then shooting 16mm and telecine to editing video and then going back to 35mm will be costly. It would be much more efficient and frugal to shoot with an HVX and edit with no additional cost and then do your filmout.

The average viewer probably couldn't tell the difference from a 16mm blowup and an HVX filmout, but they might suspect something is different. Story is king though. PD150 footage looks great transfer to 35mm so with an HVX you're even better off.

You can check out DVfilm's rates here.
Pretty much will be the best price around but some of the bigger labs could probably offer developing/telecine/filmout deals if you decide to go with 16mm.

Hope this helps,
Andy

I know the two cameras are both just tools that expose the same film, but would the Arriflex S take better lenses than the Bolex? Are Bolex lenses softer?

Another thing occurred to me... If I shoot with either of these I'll be forced to do 100% ADR for sound wont I? Aren't they both too noisy to record sound with?
