Not sure where to turn or who to ask!

I know that this question doesn't really belong here,
but everyone on this forum seems to know so much about everything,
(that may sound sarcastic...but I really mean it)
that I thought I should just put my problem out there and see if someone can help.

I met with a local fitness trainer that wanted to me to video tape one of his training sessions
and put together a short video that he could put on his website to demonstrate his teaching style.
Although I had never really tried to produce anything for the web before,
I didn't think it would be much of a problem.
But that's where I was wrong!
He said that his present web hosting site didn't allow streaming video,
so I suggested that he just embed the clip using something like Youtube.
I tried uploading the full quality Quicktime video file onto Youtube,
and they crushed the heck out of it.
He's not happy & I'm not sure what to do.
I shot the video using the DVX100B, so it wasn't HD, but the Youtube video did look like crap.
I need to find a niche to bring in some extra money and I thought that video for the web might be a good way,
but not if my video looks like Clutch Cargo!

I know this may sound really stupid,
but how do people usually have video on their websites?
And where can I learn more about it?

Any and all help would be really appreciated
Thanx,
Todd

If his site doesn't allow streaming (which seems odd to me, but I'm no expert), it can still be on his site for download.

But the key thing is for you to do the compression to get the best size/quality ratio

I did start looking into Vimeo, and their quality looked great,
but it stated that the site was only to be used for personal videos,
and I didn't know if they would allow a promotional video?

ThanKs for the suggestion

Todd

Youtube video can look fine if handled with care. Of course the HD stuff is really nice, but the SD stuff can look ok as well.

Even if it's not HD, export with HD settings for youtube and it'll look great:

1280x720 frame dimension, h.264 with maybe 2500 to 4000kbit/sec data rate. use Compressor and turn all Frame Control settings to "best". set audio to AAC at 160khz or better.

nd after you upload, wait a while. the better version isn't available right away. it takes up to an hour depending on length.

example... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHlUyZGHWqw&fmt=22

I just uploaded an SD project with these settings to youtube, and it's crystal clear.

thats weird that you uploaded the full quality version to youtube and it looked like crap..

you could try converting your videos to .flv and embedding a flash player ... or vimeo...

OR, Exposure Room.. they let you upload unlimited file size and you can embed that.. check it out... http://www.exposureroom.com

hope you find the solution right for you Todd...

what they mean by streaming they don't allow live streaming, you need a streaming server for that, that's very common, but putting a video file would work no problems, using flash, you can put a h.264 file in a flash player.

embedding a file is the same be it the file is on your website or linked to any other link vimeo or what not.

Like I said before..
the more I learn about this stuff,
the less I feel like I know!

I feel stupid when I am trying to learn new stuff!!!

I was told by the staff at this particular hosting site that
they offered unlimited bandwidth, but that they didn't allow streaming video.
They said that they were afraid of a viral video bringing their server to it's knee's.
Is this a normal practice for Website Hosting Companies?
Because aren't there a lot of websites that have video on them?
Don't they usually charge by the additional bandwidth that is used?

I know that I have asked a lot of questions already,
but here goes one more really stupid one:
I have never encoded a video for the web before,
so when you say:

putting a video file would work no problems, using flash, you can put a h.264 file in a flash player.
How do I go about loading a flash player onto a website?
and isn't that actually streaming the video file?
I am sorry for all of the stupid questions,
but I really want to try to understand what I am doing...
and the only way that I can do it,
is by asking questions.

Thanks for all of the help so far,
I do appreciate it!

Todd

i can give you an example, you can go to vimeo.com, you will see any video embeded in the first page it will have an icon called embed, you can click on it and it would be something like

"<object width="400" height="250"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=169308&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1" /><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=169308&server=vimeo.com&show_title=1&show_byline=1&show_portrait=0&color=&fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="250"></embed></object><br /><a href="http://vimeo.com/169308">Magnetosphere revisited (audio by Tosca)</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/flight404">flight404</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>."

if you put that in your html page it will embed a place with specific width and height and link to a video being stored on vimeo's site or servers, you can do a similar thing with your h.264 profile files, same concept, easily using something like adobe flash, maybe iweb or dreamweaver can supply you with the script or the code needed and you just link your h.264 file to it.

I think I am getting it,
but please bear with me just a little bit more...

Where would I load the h.264 file?
Not to my server site, right?
cause then that would be streaming the video from my server, wouldn't it?

you can start with only other video hosting sites like vimeo for example, upload you video into your vimeo account, then take the embed script to your page for now, you can look for a good hosting site that would not have crazy restrictions, i like hostmysite, not the cheapest but is reliable and i like it, probably if you look and expiriment with other sites, you might find something cheap and good, but offen times, you will get what you pay for. i would go for no restrictions with specific bandwidth every month, but that's just me, you might think that you can top 500 or 1000GB of bandwidth every month, but remember any site that offers unlimited bandwidth will still limited it in some way, maybe it will add restrictions, maybe it will limit the transfer speed so you cannot exceed the limit they have in there mind, maybe they will crame too many site per server, at the end there is no unlimited bandwidth without some kind of down side.

go with the vimeo link embed for now, expiriment and learn how to do something at your own pace, google tutorials and samples, you will find plenty online, and good luck with your site.

Well Angel...you've earned your wings!
Thanks so much for all your help,
hopefully when I get a better understanding of all of this,
I can repay it back to someone else.

They allow everything. I have seen tons of promo videos on there.

I use vimeo for the same reason you mentioned about bringing a server to its knees with a viral video. You never know whats going to pop so you want to have a host that can handle anything.

Thanx for letting me know,
I just didn't want to break the rules
(at least not right away)
For the time being I think I will use Vimeo,
cause they really do provide great quality video.
