Getting 4:4:4 out of the Red One

i have been part of a test that included the camera by the way. it's just something that you would not agree to the results of, you can disagree to anything, but you can't say that the red one is better than a viper, or has more dynamic range, or compare it to a d-21 or a genesis. i wont argue anymore about the camera, you can say whatever you want.

Like I said, you misunderstood my post. I wasn't saying that I wouldn't agree to a comparison. You told me that there were apparently only certain comparisons that I would agree to - namely ones where Red came out on top compared to other cameras. I was saying that my goal was 'not to NOT agree to comparisons' that were unfavorable to Red'. You misconstrued that to think that I would not validate comparisons in general.

Yeesh, now it's complicated.

Look. You said you were part of a test. I was interested about hearing the results of that test. Not to invalidate it. Not to argue about it. Not for you to laugh in my face about it.

without getting into any details because you can go for days debating this very issue, think about it, any seasoned dp will tell you that those cameras (viper,genesis,F23) they cost what they cost for a reason and they are rented everyday all across the world, if the red performed like those cams, there would not be a need for them because why spend 7k a day on a viper camera package when you can buy the red at 17k, if you were into racing and a mustang could do what the ferrari does, would you buy the ferrari? now please dont misunderstand my post, I have shot red numerous times and I really like the picture it takes, nice and creamy, but I know some people that swear by the viper/genesis/F23 when they have a moderate budget, if they are choosing these cams over the red, there must be a reason for it, just my .0002

Many people who I've talked to picked the Genesis over the RED not because they didn't like the image, but that the post workflow at the time was more accepted and the producer didn't want to experiment--which I can understand to a degree. However, knowing that you need to play around with the RED some to figure out how to get the best image out of it (which does have a lot to do with the post workflow), I could understand if some DP's didn't like their RED tests because they didn't know how to get the best image out of the camera.

I think some people don't want to use the RED because of price. I've had one local person tell me that even though he thinks the image is as nice as 35mm film, for his higher end clients he'd probably still shoot film because they are used to paying a higher price and that they might freak out if suddenly they didn't have to pay for film. Seems silly in the current economy--you'd think they would want to save money any where they can (although, he'll probably come around because of the economy.)
