Canon user thread - post your pictures here

Hey I looked at the picture of the bridge and you were right ilauzi, WB looks like it was off, must have had it on auto... then I tried making him a touch darker and it helped. It definitely it looks better, I am sure I could be better but I am done for tonight... I re-uploaded though.

I think I am getting better at framing + composition... at least that's what I hope.

I agree! The second photo is just stunning. Great composition Roberto and beautiful subject matter.

EDIT: shucklak - I think there might be a little TOO much detail in the sand/stones. It's not as apparent in the water, but it might look better if toned down a bit.

YES! I got a compliment on my composition wohoooo! :D Thanks guys... it helped that I placed that bird on the sky in photoshop I guess, cheaterrr!

Shucklak, I can't believe that is snow, wow... I think the sky and water look awesome though and I probably wouldn't touch them if I were you. Maybe you could try making the snow a bit more realistic and cut back on the detail and see how you like that?

EDIT: I cropped it slightly off the top and gave him a friend. Hope I didn't ruin the composition for you Kegan.

Getting good focus with the fast 50 lenses wide open takes practice. Here are a few tips:

Make sure you are shooting at 1/80th on a cropped sensor camera at 50mm. If your subject is moving then this is of course different.

Just enable the center focus point and use it on one shot focus mode. turn the lens on autofocus and use the center focus point to focus on the disired area. Push the shutter down half way to get the subject in focus and while holding it down frame your shot. You can also switch off autofocus once the focus is achieved.

If there isn't enough light to get a fast shutter speed, don't be afraid to raise the ISO. In general if you are shooting RAW you will want ot overexpose the subject by one stop roughly and then bring it back in post. This will result in a cleaner image than shooting at middle exposure at a low ISO. Its tempting to shoot at 800 rather than bumping up to 1600 but if you can overexpose by 1 stop at 1600 the end result will look closer to 400 ISO at middle exposure.

thanks for the tips! im pretty excited about the new camera, so looking forward to figuring it all out. Needless to say it is a little bit different than filmmaking.. i kinda like it.

I tried (I said tried) to make my beer look like the sun in outer space :P
Man I love the space shots in Sunshine (Danny Boyle).

Mig, I looked at your picture for 5 minutes trying to figure out what it was...then I read your description and it all made sense. I like the color tones.

Here is an old one that I never posted because of the noise. Unfortunately the only way to get this one was to shoot at ISO 800

I don't care about noise latley. I'm sick of perfectly clean images. The amount of noise a 1600 ISO cropped sensor produces is acceptable to me as long as you don't underexpose at all.

Keep in mind that this is a consumer 1/1.8" sensor I am using for these. And I used Neat Image on it too. Noise was rampant.

I think I am so worried about noise in my HVX that it really gets to me still. I have so many self imposed bulshi* rules that I haven't shot some really cool opportunities I had, so worried about framing that I hold myself back and undermine my instincts... I am thinking I need to go back to the basics now, just shoot when it makes you smile.

This was a pano attempt the same day, again no tripod or anything to lean the camera on and get decent framing so I had to use ISO800.

There are some obvious issues with it but instead of working on it so much I'd rather just go shoot it right.

Here is an other that I never shared but found stunning, and sad. On the way back from San Diego we drove through the smoke stack of the San Diego fires of 2008.

All I did was barely saturate it by 5 points in PS.
