Best HDV Workflow?

I'm about to shoot a ten minute film on the XHA1 with a RedRock M2 and I'm wondering what will be the best way to edit the footage and keep it HD. My eventual output will be DVD and some sort of web or server based distribution (where an HD size file won't be a problem).

I used to edit XHA1 footage in Vegas using a CineForm intermediate, so I'm no stranger to intermediate editing. I just don't know where to start with FCP. Should I use ProRes or Apple Intermediate Codec?

capture hdv, I don't log and capture, just ingest the whole tape.
Don't convert anything to edit with.
Set Render Control in user preferences to Apple Prores 422. Than anytime you render a sequence it will be converted to Prores.
 
well storage might be an issue, hdv is 13 gb an hour, prores 422 65 gb an hour, so if you capture as prores 422, and we are not even talking about prores 422 hd which is 99 gb an hour, you will be using a lot more drive space.
 
Well I have about 220GB free on my external, and I can't imagine I'd be capturing much more than an hour of footage anyway, so I think I'll be ok. Thank you for bringing it up!
 
Does prores actually make colour correction look better...? Or is this a myth, from what i've tested, both look identical after heavy colour correction..?

Just straight capture as prores. You loose the ability to set ins and out before capture and it takes a bit longer but it's worth it.

Do you really find that it's worth it? What are the benefits of using so much more drive space when you can set FCP to render any effects in ProRes instead of converting every single take, including unused portions, slates and everything else?

I can't tell a difference either. I edit using the ProRes rendering options mentioned above, and so does everybody else I know, but I'm not even sure that doing that is worth it.
