Using an HVX on a tripod head rated for 28lbs?

I'm in the market for a new tripod and was wondering whether I would have issues using my HVX on a "heavy duty" head?

Eventually I may add an adapter, matte box, etc so I want to ensure my tripod can handle the future weight requirements.

That being said, I've found a used tripod, but the head is rated for 28lbs and the fixed counter balance range is 17 - 28lbs.

I'm assuming this means that my camera will be much too light for the head to function as intended?

Sorry to bump this already, but I'd hate to lose out on this tripod.

Hoping someone can answer whether a heavy duty tripod head would function properly if the camera is lighter than the head's counter balance range?

Your camera won't trigger the counterbalance. I've had that issue putting my DVX on some heads.

Just put some lead weights on the HVX and you'll be fine.. :)

Thanks for the reply.

This is my fear. I'd hate to buy this tripod only to find it doesn't function properly with my camera.

Sad, you'd think it better to have an over-rated head than an under-rated...

Properly rated is the thing. When I put my cam on a head that was over-rated, we tipped my camera forward, and the head pushed it right back to level! Not what you're looking for!

I'm not sure. This is a Libec H60 head.

It's got a FIXED counter balance. I understand that it's not adjustable, but I'm not sure if it can be disengaged.

I've actually used that head with an HVX. It's not as terrible as some combos I've tried (it's certainly workable), but it needs to be locked down to hold any kind of tilt, unless you're some kind of tripod-master. It really shines when I put a full-sized ENG camera on it, but with the HVX, I guess it could work (and a bunch of students in the Communications lab I oversee use it pretty regularly - though I'm not sure how many of them know it shouldn't work that way).

The fluid action is great though, and for an adapter setup, it'd probably be perfect, but I think for a stock HVX, it's a little light for my taste.
