when you say 6gb files(it would be either a collection of files about 6 gb each, or a collection of files with a combined total of 6gb), i'll go with the first one, because the second one doesn't have any problems.
you can open up each file individually, in premiere or ae or any other application, export or render out to another smaller, more compressed file, then delete the original after you made sure that you exported and checked the new file, keep going one by one until you finish, and you will have some space to edit the material and the hard drive would be fast enough.
and for future projects, you need to free up your hard drive just to have good sustained performance. good luck
you need to compress to something you can edit, avi or mov or mp4 containers, and anything should do, xvid or divx, or mpeg2 or x.264, or what ever, anything like that should be compatible and easy to find a software to do and can be done and edited in premiere and ae.
yeah go one file at a time compress remove original, go to the next, keep going.
google what you need to do to compress,
then what you need to do to edit,
i'm out.
