Blu ray burner - deal or no deal

There's no telling how quickly they'll come down in price. But if history tells us anything 2010 is about on target for at least sub-$150 burners for the cheaper models. Hopefully by then BDR authoring software will also be fully featured/reliable.

I'd say buy it. The circuit citys by me are open for 5 more days, Ive been buying up all kinds of stuff at great prices, some 60-70% off

Prices are coming down each month over here (well, on internal writers at least)

I work for an IT distributor over here and I've seen a ~$50USD price drop since last month - it's a sign of things to come for sure :)

Why buy something you don't need? You say you don't need to be able to burn for a year or two, so why tie up $170 on something that's not really going to do anything for you?

good point, but I guess its the lure of getting something that I think I might need in year- for less now than it would cost in a year. If memory serves, it was about 3-4 years after the first consumer DVD burners were out before they came down under $100. And that was when the DVD format was on fire.

Blu-ray is not on fire, and seems stangnant- so my guess it would take longer. And if a client ever asked me "can I get it on blu-ray" I want to be able to say yes, and then explain why they probably dont need it on BD.

Related- IMO if Sony, who is pushing BD, wants this format to take off they need to be willing to loose some money on the players and start slashing prices. I think if HD-DVD had won- the format would be moving faster.

I burn BD-Video at work right now.

Its a pain in the ass. The software is mostly to blame since its just not mature enough. Since our primary function is to create content and not make discs, we cant justify the $5,500 price tag on Sonic Scenarist. Adobe's CS3 software is not ready for making BD-R discs with more than 1 menu and a few titles without major crashing headaches (read: cannot compile discs with large Encore Projects).

BD may be in the pro market, but its not in the independent producer's market yet mostly because of software maturity issues, not hardware costs.
