Thinking of moving to New York...

I lived in NY on serveral occasions. It is a wonderful city. But it costs so much to live there. Once the hit factory shut down I moved back to maryland and I'm happy with that. if you're young and don't have a bunch of kids, give it a shot. You only live once spending a few years in NY is one hell of a time.

Well, there are many other options over living directly IN the city. I mean, he could live in one of the other Burroughs or he could live in north NJ or Upstate NY. He'd have a very manageable train or bus commute and the price would be slashed.

Ha ha, my neighborhood IS in one of the other boroughs :)

My girlfriend lives in a nice-ish neighborhood in Queens (Woodside) in a big 1-bedroom for $1300/month. There are plenty of places in Jersey City and Hoboken for around $1000 - $1200 /month in nice neighborhoods. If you're ok with a 30 minute commute to midtown, you can make it happen.

I think I remember you are a web programmer? If that is correct, you can probably score decent temp jobs to keep the cash flowing... Remember - f you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Everyone should live in New York for at least a year. Maybe now is your time.

Tom, you're always welcome up here in the Albany area. There's all kinds of theatre work here & it's usually the first stop for the off-broadway stuff from NYC. It's MUCH cheaper living here and the train right down to Penn station (7th & 31st) is $98.00 round trip and about 2 hours. One of my clients is right in Penn Plaza, so I take the train down, get a lot of work done (or nap), have meetings all day...and come home in the evening.

Also, let me know more about your Flash chops...I'm always looking for new programming talent, might be able to throw some work at you.

Albany is 4.5 hours from Montreal, 3.5 hours to Boston, 2 hours from NYC, 3 hours from the heart of the Adirondacks, 4 hours from the best lobster in Maine...really a great location.

We'd love to have you!

Weighing the pros and cons...

Staying in LA:
Pros
- I'm already here
- I have an apartment that costs me less than 800 a month
- I know the city well
- I know quite a few people here who are pretty close friends

Cons:
- Theatre here isn't very good
- It's hard to be taken seriously as an actor. (Of course, building a resume here and getting good training might change that)
- I would have to sell everything I own

Moving to New York:
Pros
- Good training
- Good theatre

Cons
- I don't know the area at all
- I've never been there
- Like Isaac said, it's expensive

You've easily answered your own dilema here. Do the math and you're better off staying in LA.

The funny thing is, I know tons of people in NY who wants to relocate to LA, that's pretty funny... You are in the Mecca of Hollywood, why would you want to leave?

And make sure you have atleast 4 months rent saved up before you move to NY, just incase.

Tom, I'd hate to see you go but of course do what you feel is best.

Sorry I missed you guys last week. I ended up at the Kaiser Urgent Care. But I'm feeling muuuuuuuuuuch better now. Come by the user group meeting on Saturday, eh? :)

...to do some theatre and really work on the acting. I need to do stage and build the chops... and pay some dues...

You said this on Facebook, but I'd like to know how you're doing now. Are you getting any roles or making any headway? What's the deal?

-Nate
