I made a mess-- HVX 1080 24pa Interlacing questions

Hey--

I am editing a short that was shot 1080 24PA on an HVX200A. When I logged and transfered the footage, I removed the duplicate frames. Foolishly, I assumed that I now had true 24p footage, and that FCP auto assigned me a timeline that reflected that. I cannot for the life of me figure out why I didn't double check to make sure.

Here I am a few weeks later, and with a rough cut done and starting on my visual effects work. While messing with the scale on some footage in After Effects, I noticed serious interlacing artifacts and discovered that my footage in FCP is all 29.97.

I know there are lots of tutorials out there somewhere (although all I can find are posts referencing that fact and not the actual tutorials) about taking your footage and using reverese telecine in cinema tools to get 23.98 footage. I can figure that part out, but is there any way to salvage what I have edited now? If I change it to 23.98, will I end up with problems with my edits (lost frames leading to black space, etc?)

Any advice/help would be appreciated. Sorry for asking what is probably a very basic question.

Sure- the short version is:

select all clips in the bin, Tool>Remove Advanced Pulldown. Then go to your sequence- select all clips and copy them.

Make a new sequence at 23.98 and paste the clips into that sequence.

not sure i've ever told you this, but i love you sir. love you.

just for my education--if i imported this with teh "remove duplicate frames" box check in log and transfer, why do i have to go through and do this now?

Well there is a chance that the footage was actually shot 24p and not 24pA which could be an issue. But I'd try my suggestion first and see what happens. Try it on one clip at a time at first.

also, if i paste the old sequence into a new 23.98 sequence i end up with small gaps between my edits. functionally they'll be the same edits, right, just missing a few pulldown frames?

yeah I would step through and remove gaps manually. It's unfortunately not as simple as just cutting and pasting. Your edits will be as near as possible to the 29.97 but obviously not exact as the timecodes don't match. So you'll spend some massaging and checking audio sync, effects, etc.

OK so i'm back!

I am so bloody confused here I don't even know where to begin. After going through the process of removing all the advanced pulldown and creating a new timeline at 23.98, I'm noticing that while I only have 24 frames, some of those frames have fields (Every 4th frame has fields). I don't even know how that is possible.

Here is my workflow. In the log and transfer window, I have selected Remove Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate Frames. I also have the Pro-Res HQ 422 selected for all the P2 Plug in and AVC Plug in options. I queue that up, let it get the wrapper on it, and end up with 29.97 FPS footage in my bin. I select those files, and do Tools>>Removed Advanced Pulldown. After that I have 23.98 footage, but I STILL have fields in some of the frames!

All of this is very frustrating because if I search through the video frame by frame in the Log and Transfer window, I do not have fields. What the hell am I doing wrong?

an update for anyone who is having this problem as well, although i seem to be the only one--

my current fix is to use Premiere CS3 to import the P2 folder, export that as a movie with the pro res 422 settings and reconnect the clip in FCP to the new movie made through premiere. exhausting and time consuming, but it's working.

so, the files coming out of Premiere are being forced into independent clip status in FCP, and are giving me weird, echo-y audio. Could really use any help with this.

Is everyone in the world able to shoot 1080 24pA on and HVX 200 and import it to be truly progressive in FCS2?
